1999 UIAA Climbing World Championships
The 1999 UIAA Climbing World Championships, the 5th edition, were held in Birmingham, United Kingdom from 2 to 3 December 1999. It was organized by the Union Internationale des Associations d'Alpinisme (UIAA). The championships consisted of lead and speed events. Medalists Lead In men's lead, Bernardino Lagni triumphed over Yuji Hirayama who took silver and Maksym Petrenko who took bronze. In women's lead, Liv Sansoz won and defended her title. National Indoor Arena
Arena Birmingham (known for sponsorship reasons as Utilita Arena Birmingham, and previously as The Barclaycard Arena and originally as the National Indoor Arena) is an indoor arena and sporting venue in central Birmingham, United Kingdom. It is owned by parent company the NEC Group. When it was opened in 1991, it was the largest indoor arena in the UK. The arena was renamed Utilita Arena Birmingham on 15 April 2020. The arena is located alongside the Birmingham Canal Navigations Main Line's Old Turn Junction and opposite the National Sea Life Centre in Brindleyplace. Liv Sansoz
Liv Sansoz (born 12 February 1977) is a French professional rock climber, ice climber, and base jumper. She is known for being three times World Cup winner and twice World Champion in Lead climbing. She had a year off after a fall but returned and climbed every Alp over 4,000 metres. Climbing career Sansoz was born in Bourg-Saint-Maurice in 1977 and grew up in the alps where she discovered climbing. Her parents built her a climbing wall and by 16 she was in the French National team. She has twice been the world champion and she has won the World Cup three times. She lost her confidence for a year after she cracked a vertebra in her neck after a 10-metre fall. This ended her competitive career but she regained her confidence to climb. In 2017 she set out to climb every Alpine summit over 4,000 metres in a year. Sandrine Levet (born July 22, 1982) is a French professional rock climber, specializing in competition climbing and competition bouldering and competition lead climbing in particular. Levet is one of the most successful female competition climbers in history. Levet dominated competition bouldering in the early to mid-2000s, winning five IFSC Bouldering World Cups, and one IFSC Bouldering World Championship. Levet was also a strong competition lead climber, finishing second three times in the IFSC Lead Climbing World Cup, which also helped her to win the overall IFSC Combined Climbing World Cup five times. Alexandre Chabot (born December 27, 1981) is a French professional rock climber, specialising in lead climbing. He won three consecutive Lead Climbing World Cups and three consecutive Rock Masters. In France, he was awarded seven times the national Lead Climbing Champion title.
