People's Party – Movement For A Democratic Slovakia
Former headquarters of the ĽS-HZDS political party at Tomášikova Street 32/A in Bratislava The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia ( sk, Hnutie za demokratické Slovensko, HZDS) was a national-populist political party in Slovakia. The party is commonly considered as authoritarian and illiberal. During 1992–1998, HDZS was the leading party of the government, led by Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar. The party rule was characterized by a fundamental violation of civil liberties, rule of law and a halt to post-communist economic reforms, European integration. After 1998 parliamentary election, the party remained in opposition for two terms still as the strongest party. In opposition, HZDS moved its positions from Euroscepticism to pro-Europeanism and joined European Democratic Party, although it did not profess EDP's liberal ideology. Michal Kováč
Michal Kováč (3 August 1930 – 5 October 2016) was the first president of Slovakia, having served from 1993 through 1998. Early life Kováč was born in the village of Ľubiša in then Czechoslovakia in 1930. He graduated from the present-day University of Economics in Bratislava and was a bank employee of the Státní banka československá and of other banks. As such, he spent some years in London and in Cuba in the 1960s. During the Normalization (Czechoslovakia), Normalization he was subject to some persecution. Political career During and after the Velvet Revolution, from 12 December 1989 to 17 May 1991 (when he resigned) Kováč was the Finance Minister of the Slovak Socialist Republic, Slovak (Socialist) Republic. Boris Zala
Boris Zala is a Slovak politician for the parliamentary party SMER-SD, a member of the Slovak parliament, and the current Chairman of the parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. He is also Assistant Professor at Constantine the Philosopher University (UKF) in Nitra, Columnist, Chair of the Political Science, and European Studies Department at UKF's Faculty of Philosophy. Education and Professional Career Zala graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Comenius University in Bratislava in 1979. After graduation, he proceeded with his study of philosophy and received his PhD degree (1981) and CSc degree (1995) from the same university. Slovak National Party
The Slovak National Party ( sk, Slovenská národná strana, SNS) is a nationalist political party in Slovakia. The party characterizes itself as a nationalist party based on both social and the European Christian values. Since 1990 SNS has won seats in every Slovak parliament but three (in 2002, 2012 and 2020) and has been part of the government from 2006 to 2010. Magdaléna Vášáryová (; referred also as Magda Vášáryová ; born 26 August 1948) is a Slovak actress and diplomat, prominent for her liberal anti-nationalist stances. In 1971, she completed her studies at Comenius University in Bratislava. Until 1989, she acted in several Slovak theatres, including Slovak National Theatre, and in numerous movies. She was ambassador of Czechoslovakia in Austria (1990-1993) and ambassador of Slovakia in Poland (2000-2005). She was one of the candidates in the 1999 presidential election, but did not advance to the second round of the election. From February 2005 to July 2006, she held the position of State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia. Rudolf Schuster
Rudolf Schuster (born 4 January 1934) is a Slovak politician, who served as the second president of Slovakia from 1999 to 2004. He was elected on 29 May 1999 and inaugurated on 15 June. In the presidential elections of April 2004, in which he sought re-election, Schuster was defeated. He received only 7.4% of the vote, with three other candidates (more specifically Ivan Gašparovič, Vladimír Mečiar, and Eduard Kukan) receiving more than that. He was succeeded by Ivan Gašparovič. Life and career Schuster was born in Košice. From 1964 to 1990, he was a member of the Communist Party of Slovakia.
