Letterkenny Town Council
Letterkenny ( ga, Leitir Ceanainn , meaning 'hillside of the O'Cannons'), nicknamed 'the Cathedral Town', is the largest and most populous town in County Donegal, a county in Ulster, the northern province in Ireland. Letterkenny lies on the River Swilly in East Donegal in the north-west of Ulster, and has a population of 19,274. It is the 36th largest settlement in all of Ireland by population (placing it ahead of Sligo, Larne, Banbridge, Armagh and Killarney), and is the 15th largest settlement by population in the province of Ulster (most of which comprises the separate jurisdiction of modern-day Northern Ireland). Along with the nearby city of Derry, Letterkenny is considered a regional economic gateway for the north-west of Ireland. 1999 Irish Local Elections
The 1999 Irish local elections were held in all the counties, cities and towns of Ireland on Friday, 11 June 1999, on the same day as the European elections. Results 18 Workers' Party councillors had left the party in 1992 upon the creation of Democratic Left. Seán Maloney (Irish Politician)
Seán Maloney (born 9 January 1945) is a former Irish politician from Letterkenny, County Donegal. Formerly a member of the Labour Party, he joined Fine Gael in 2000. Maloney unsuccessfully contested the 1992 general election as a Labour Party candidate in the Donegal North-East constituency, but in the subsequent elections to Seanad Éireann he was elected in the Labour Panel to the 20th Seanad. He stood unsuccessfully in the Donegal North-East by-election in April 1996, and he was not elected at the 1997 general election, when his share of the first-preference votes fell from over 11% in 1992 to only 5.5%. He was defeated in subsequent Seanad elections, but in the local elections in 1991 he was elected a member of both Letterkenny Town Council and of Donegal County Council. Ciaran Brogan
Ciaran Brogan (born 1971 or 1972) is an Irish businessman and Fianna Fáil politician from County Donegal. He is a member of Donegal County Council, representing the Letterkenny Electoral Area, and was a member of Letterkenny Town Council. He topped the poll in elections in 2004 and 2009. Brogan owns SARK Construction Ltd, based in Letterkenny. Several members of Donegal County Council, including Barry O'Neill, have queried how €4.812 million was spent on SARK's council-backed housing development in Dungloe. The company is known to have received contracts worth more than €10 million. SARK Construction is also a recognised tax defaulter. However, Brogan has vowed to "carefully monitor" any comments made in the council chamber concerning himself or Sark Construction. Terry McEniff is an Irish people, Irish businessman and former politician and mayor from County Donegal. Dessie Larkin
Dessie Larkin (c. 1970 – 18 March 2019) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was a member of Donegal County Council representing the Letterkenny electoral area from 1999 to 2014. He served as the County Council's chair of the Planning & Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee. He was the highest paid councillor in Ulster. James Harte (born 27 February 1958) is an Irish former Labour Party politician and was a member of Seanad Éireann from April 2011 to September 2015. Formerly an elected representative of Fine Gael, he left after failing to win the party's nomination for the 2007 general election, and ran unsuccessfully as an independent instead. He joined the Labour Party in 2010, running unsuccessfully for that party at the 2011 general election but was subsequently elected to the Seanad.
