1999 Beach Volleyball World Championships
These page shows the results of the II Beach Volleyball World Championships, held from 19 July to 24 July 1999 in Marseille, France. It was the second official edition of this event, after ten unofficial championships (1987-1996) all held in Rio de Janeiro, and the first to be organized in Europe. The event, organized every two years and with $600,000 in total prize money, was held in a special facility for 5,000 spectators. At the end of the competition the spectators totalled nearly 50,000. Swatch FIVB World Championships
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships is the double-gender world championship for the sport of beach volleyball organized by the ' (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, FIVB) the sport's global governing body. The first official edition of the event was held in Los Angeles, California, Los Angeles, United States in 1997 and tournaments had been awarded every two years since then. Before 1997, ten unofficial championships not organized by the FIVB were all held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil between 1987 and 1996. Sinjin Smith
Christopher St. John "Sinjin" Smith (born May 7, 1957, in Santa Monica, California) is a professional beach volleyball player. He won one U.S. championship and two World championships with Randy Stoklos. He began to compete as a professional in the two man beach volleyball tournaments of Southern California at age fifteen. He went to college at UCLA, where he played setter and outside hitter in head coach Al Scates' 6-2 system. The UCLA Bruins won the national championship in Smith's freshman year. The following year the Bruins did not make the final four, but as a junior the team again reached the finals before losing to Pepperdine. Smith was selected to the all tournament team. In his senior year in 1979 the Bruins again reached the finals, defeating cross town rival USC to win the national championship. Liz Masakayan
Liz Masakayan (born December 31, 1964 in Quezon City, Philippines) is a former indoor and beach volleyball player, and is currently a coach. She participated in the 1988 Summer Olympics with the United States women's national volleyball team, and as a beach volleyball player won a total of 47 tournaments in her career. Early life Volleyball was the last organized sport Masakayan tried out for in her first year (10th grade) at Santa Monica High School (a three-year school back in the 1980s). Her first year was spent on the junior varsity squad, and the last two on the varsity counterpart, where the team won the California state championship in 1981. Masakayan played Little League baseball when she was ten, the first year it allowed girls to play due to Title IX. Most of the time she was the only girl on the team. Jenny Johnson Jordan
Jennifer A. Johnson Jordan (born June 8, 1973) is an American female beach volleyball player. She won the silver medal at the 1999 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Marseille, alongside Annett Davis. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and was a member of their UCLA Bruins women's volleyball, Bruins volleyball team. She competed in the Beach volleyball at the 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's tournament, 2000 Summer Olympics with Davis, finishing in fifth place. Annett Davis (born September 22, 1973) is an American beach volleyball player, who won the silver medal at the 1999 Beach Volleyball World Championships, alongside Jenny Johnson Jordan. Career Throughout her career, she has partnered with Jenny Johnson Jordan. Adriana Behar
Adriana Brandão Behar (born February 14, 1969, in Rio de Janeiro) was one of the most outstanding volleyball players of her generation. Behar is Jewish. She moved to beach volleyball in 1993, after playing in the Brazilian women's national indoor volleyball squad. Eric Fonoimoana
Eric Fonoimoana (born June 7, 1969) is an American former beach volleyball player of Samoan descent who paired with Dain Blanton to win the gold medal in beach volleyball at the 2000 Olympic Games.
