The 1998–99 season was the eighth time Tennis Borussia Berlin played in the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga, the second highest tier of the German football league system. After 34 league games, Tennis Borussia finished 6th. The club had a long run in the DFB-Pokal; making it to the quarter-finals where they lost 2–1 after extra time away to SV Werder Bremen. Tennis Borussia Berlin is a German football club based in the locality of Westend in Berlin. History The team was founded in 1902 as ''Berliner Tennis- und Ping-Pong-Gesellschaft Borussia'' taking its name from its origins as a tennis and table tennis club. Borussia is a Latinised version of Prussia and was a widely used name for sports clubs in the former state of Prussia. In 1903 the club took up football and quickly developed a rivalry with Berlin's leading side Hertha BSC. In 1913 the club changed its name to Berliner Tennis Club Borussia. They won their first city league championship in 1932 in the Oberliga Berlin-Brandenburg and repeated the feat in 1941, this time by defeating Hertha (8–2) in the Gauliga Berlin-Brandenburg. Goran Ćurko (; born 21 August 1968) is a Serbian former Association football, footballer who played as a Goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper. After starting out in Yugoslavia, Ćurko spent the vast majority of his career in Germany. He played for seven German clubs for over a decade (1993–2003), collecting 183 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga. Career Born in Novi Sad, Ćurko made his Yugoslav First League debut with FK Vojvodina, Vojvodina in the 1989–90 Yugoslav First League, 1989–90 season. Celaleddin Koçak (born 24 November 1977 in West Berlin, West Germany) is a Turkish footballer. He began his career at Tennis Borussia Berlin but found little success there. Matthias Hamann (born 10 February 1968, in Waldsassen) is a German Association football, football Manager (association football), manager and former player. He is the brother of Dietmar Hamann. Marco Walker (born 2 May 1970) is a Swiss football manager and a former international who played as a defender during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Club career Walker started his youth football with local club FC Bellach. Jens Melzig (born 28 September 1965) is a former professional German footballer who played as a defender. Career Born in Cottbus, Melzig began his career with Energie Cottbus, helping the club earn promotion to the DDR-Oberliga in 1986, and again in 1988 after they had bounced straight back down to the DDR-Liga. After German reunification, Cottbus failed to qualify for the professional leagues, so in 1991 Melzig joined Dynamo Dresden, who had entered the Bundesliga. He was a first-team regular in two seasons with Dynamo, before joining Bayer Leverkusen for another two-year spell, in which he was mostly used as a backup. In 1995, Melzig joined 2.
