Úrvalsdeild
The Besta deild karla () is a professional association football league in Iceland and the highest level of the Icelandic football league system. The competition was founded in 1912 as the Icelandic Championship. Because of the harsh winters in Iceland, it is generally played in the spring and summer (April to September). It is governed by the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) and has 12 teams. By the end of the 2022–23 season, UEFA ranked the league No. 48 in Europe. From 27 April 2009 to 2022, the league had an active agreement on the league's name rights with Ölgerðin, the Icelandic franchisee for Pepsi. From the 2019 season to the end of the 2021 season, the league was popularly referred to as Pepsi Max deildin (The Pepsi Max League). On 24 February 2022, the league was rebranded as Besta deild karla. The clubs play each other home and away. Valur Men's Football
The Valur men's football team, commonly known as Valur (, ), is the men's football department of the Knattspyrnufélagið Valur multi-sport club. The club is based in Reykjavík, Iceland, and currently plays in the Besta deild karla, the top league of men's football in Iceland. The team plays its home games at Hlíðarendi in Reykjavík. The team's colours are red and white. Valur has spent most of its time in the top-flight of Icelandic football, spending only three seasons outside the top tier. Valur is one of the most successful football clubs in Iceland, with 23 Icelandic championships. Early beginnings Football arrived in Iceland before the end of the nineteenth century, and as elsewhere, became popular amongst young people. Guðmundur Benediktsson
Guðmundur Benediktsson nicknamed Gummi Ben (born 3 September 1974) is an Icelandic TV personality, sports commentator and former footballer and manager. Playing career At a young age, Guðmundur attracted the attention of major foreign clubs. At 15, he was approached by teams such as Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham and Stuttgart. Later, while still 15, he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. After the injury, he was offered the choice of going to Stuttgart or Germinal Ekeren, opting for the latter because he believed he would get more playing time. In 1997, he went on trial at Preston North End (which at the time was managed by David Moyes) and was offered a one-month contract which would be renewed on a monthly basis (due to Guðmundur's record of injury problems). Guðmundur rejected the deal, as he had a newborn (his son Albert) and needed more long-term security. Sigurður Ragnar Eyjólfsson
Sigurður "Siggi" Ragnar Eyjólfsson (born 1 December 1973) is an Icelandic football manager and former player who played as a striker. From 2007 until 2013, he served as the head coach of the Iceland women's national team, guiding them to the 2009 and 2013 editions of the UEFA Women's Championship. Sigurður secured his place in Walsall history by scoring the third goal in the team's 3–1 win over Oldham Athletic in 1999, to secure promotion to the second tier of English football. In August 2013, Sigurður resigned as coach of Iceland's women's team after seven years. He continued in his role as head of education at the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) and was looking to move into coaching men's football. In January 2017, Sigurður joined Chinese side Jiangsu Suning as head coach of their women's team. He was then appointed as the coach of the China women's national football team in November. Arnór Guðjohnsen
Arnór Guðjohnsen (born 30 April 1961) is an Icelandic former professional footballer who played as a striker. He spent seven years with Belgian club Anderlecht and was the top scorer in the 1986–87 season. He is the father of striker Eiður Guðjohnsen and the grandfather of striker Sveinn Aron Guðjohnsen. His younger son, also named Arnór, signed for Swansea City in July 2017, at the age of 16. Club career Starting his career at Víkingur in Iceland, Arnór also played for Valur and Stjarnan, Lokeren and Anderlecht in Belgium, Bordeaux in France, Häcken and Örebro in Sweden. Arnór took the final penalty of the 1984 UEFA Cup final shootout which was saved by Tottenham's Tony Parks. International career Arnór is the father and agent of striker Eiður Guðjohnsen.
