1998 Abduction Of Foreign Engineers In Chechnya
The 1998 abduction of foreign engineers took place when four United Kingdom-based specialists were seized by unidentified Chechen gunmen in Grozny, the capital of the unrecognized secessionist Chechen Republic of Ichkeria (ChRI). After more than two months in captivity, all four men were found brutally murdered, reportedly following a failed rescue bid. As of 2022, no one has been tried in this case. The victims were three Britons: Peter Kennedy (46), of Hereford, Darren Hickey (26), from Surrey, Rudi Petschi (42), of Devon, and New Zealand-born Stan Shaw (58). Turpal-Ali Atgeriyev (8 May 1969 – 18 August 2002) was a deputy prime minister, national security minister of Chechnya. Biography Atgeriev was a former Soviet traffic police officer and a veteran of the Georgian-Abkhazian War. During the First Chechen War he coordinated all units during the battles of Grozny and served as a field commander of the Shelkovsky District of Chechnya, including taking part in the 1996 Kizlyar-Pervomayskoye hostage crisis in Dagestan. Later, he became a Deputy Prime Minister in the government of the Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov. Vakha Arsanov (Russian: Ваха Арсанов; 1950 – 15 May 2005) was a vice president in the Aslan Maskhadov government of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
