The 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race was the 54th annual running of the "blue water classic" Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. It was hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia based in Sydney, New South Wales. It was the most disastrous in the race's history, with the loss of six lives and five yachts. 55 sailors were rescued in the largest peacetime search and rescue effort ever seen in Australia. Ian Bruce Carrick Kiernan (4 October 1940 – 16 October 2018) was an Australian yachtsman, property developer, builder, and environmental campaigner, known for co-founding with Kim McKay the not-for-profit ''Clean Up Australia'' campaign in 1989 and, in 1993, a similar '' Clean Up the World'' operation, serving as the event's chairman, the annual initiative attracted participation from 30 million volunteers in 80 countries. Early life Kiernan was born in Sydney to George Arthur and Leslie Katherine Kiernan. He was educated at The Scots College in Sydney, The Armidale School in northern New South Wales, and the Sydney Technical College, where he trained as a builder. Career Kiernan was a yachtsman, sailing competitively for more than 40 years and representing Australia at the Admiral's, Southern Cross, Dunhill, Clipper, Kenwood and Trans Pacific Cup competitions. S&S 34
S&S 34 is a cruising and racing fibreglass monohull sailboat class. It was based on a design by Olin Stephens from Sparkman and Stephens after a commission from British yachtsman Michael Winfield. The design features a skeg-hung rudder and a Bermuda rig with a large, overlapping headsail. Production history The prototype was a 36' wooden one-tonner which Winfield named ''Morningcloud''. From this Sparkman and Stephens were asked to develop a production design which became the S&S 34. The design was established as a new class in 1968 and quickly achieved great racing success. Two sets of moulds were built, with Winfield building several boats before the first set were sold to UK boatbuilder Acquafibre. Alex Whitworth (born 22 April 1942 in Malta) is best known as an Australian sailor . Between 2005 and 2010 he sailed double handed twice around the world in '' Berrimilla II'', a ''Brolga''-class 33 ft sailing boat. The first circumnavigation was around Cape Horn from Sydney to England and back around Africa, during which he communicated with Astronaut Dr. Leroy Chiao, the commander of Expedition 10 on the International Space Station. The second, via the North West Passage, evolved from Whitworth’s contact with the Space Station and a later meeting with Dr. Pascal Lee who runs NASA’s Haughton Mars Camp on Devon Island. ''Berrimilla II'' is a 33 ft yacht, most famous for performing two remarkable circumnavigations and for being the 77th vessel to transit the North West Passage since Amundsen’s '' Gjoa'' in 1903–06; her transit was the 114th (some vessels have done more than one). The Farr 40 is a 40-foot one-design sailboat designed by Farr Yacht Design in 1996 following after the Mumm 30. It was originally designed as a one design class but had some compromises in design to rate under the International Measurement System (IMS) rule. The class has held World Sailing class status since 1997. Approximately 140 were built. In 1996, the first Farr 40 One Design was launched at Carroll Marine in Newport, Rhode Island.
