1998 Scottish Claymores Season
The 1998 Scottish Claymores season was the fourth year of competition for the franchise in the NFL Europe League (NFLEL). The team was led by head coach Jim Criner in his fourth year, and played its home games at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh (four) and Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland (one). Jim Criner
Jim Criner (born March 30, 1940) is a former American football player and coach. He was the head coach at Boise State University from 1976 to 1982 and at Iowa State University from 1983 to 1986, compiling a career record of as a college football head coach. Criner was also the head coach of the NFL Europe's Scottish Claymores from 1995 to 2000, and the short-lived XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws in 2001. Criner's 1980 Boise State team won the NCAA Division I-AA Championship and his Scottish Claymores squad won World Bowl IV in 1996. He was later a scout for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL) under head coach Dick Vermeil, whom he assisted at UCLA from 1974 to 1975. Paul McCallum (Canadian Football)
Paul McCallum (born January 7, 1970) is a former Canadian football punter and placekicker. McCallum had been a member of four different CFL franchises, one XFL team, an NFL Europa team, and a Scottish third division club. At the time of his retirement, McCallum was the oldest active player in the CFL, having played in 23 seasons over the course of his career. Junior career McCallum played junior football with the Surrey Rams of the Canadian Junior Football League. Stan Jones (American Football)
Stanley Paul Jones (November 24, 1931 – May 21, 2010) was an American professional football player who was a guard, offensive tackle and defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991. Jones is credited as the first professional player to use weight training to improve his conditioning for football. Jim Sochor
Jim Sochor (February 11, 1938 – November 23, 2015) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at the University of California, Davis from 1970 to 1988 during which time compiling a record of 156–41–5 and won 18 consecutive conference championships, then a college football record. Sochor also served as the athletic director at UC Davis from 1989 to 1991. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1999. Barry Sims
Barry Sims (born December 1, 1974) is a former American football offensive lineman. He was drafted by the Scottish Claymores in the 17th round of the NFL Europe Draft in 1999. He played college football at Utah. Sims played nine seasons for the Oakland Raiders and three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. High school career Sims lettered in football, basketball and track at Park City High School (Utah). He was all-League as a two-way lineman. In basketball, Sims played forward and center as well as participated in track as a shot putter, high jumper, and long jumper. On October 15, 2009, Sims' #72 Park City Miners football jersey was the first ever to be retired at that school. Carey Wayne Bender (born January 28, 1972, in Marion, Iowa) is a former professional American football running back in the National Football League. Christopher Charles Brantley (born December 12, 1970) is a former American football wide receiver in the National Football League. Brantley graduated in 1989 from Teaneck High School in Teaneck, New Jersey and was inducted into the Teaneck Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2011.
