1998 Railway Cup Hurling Championship
The 1998 Railway Cup Hurling Championship was the 70th staging of the Railway Cup since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1927. The cup began on 8 November 1998 and ended on 22 November 1998. Munster were the defending champions, however, they were beaten by Leinster in the semi-final. On 22 November 1998, Leinster won the cup after a 0-16 to 2–09 defeat of Connacht in the final at Nowlan Park. This was their 21st Railway Cup title overall and their first title since 1993. The Leinster Council is a provincial council of the Gaelic Athletic Association sports of hurling, Gaelic football, camogie, rounders and handball in the province of Leinster. Connacht GAA (Irish: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Chonnacht) or formally the Connacht Provincial Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association is the governing body for Gaelic games that are played in the province of Connacht, Ireland. Charlie Carter
Charles Gerard Carter (born 19 January 1971) is an Irish former hurler who played as a corner-forward at senior level for the Kilkenny county team. Born in Gowran, County Kilkenny, Carter first played competitive hurling whilst at school at St Kieran's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later joining the under-21 and junior sides. He made his senior debut during the 1990-91 National League. Carter went on to play a key role for Kilkenny, and won two All-Ireland medals, four Leinster medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. As a member of the Leinster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Carter won one Railway Cup medal. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. The cup began on 8 November 1997 and ended on 9 November 1997. Munster were the defending champions. Nowlan Park
UPMC Nowlan Park (; ) is the principal Gaelic Athletic Association stadium in Kilkenny, Ireland. Named after James Nowlan (the longest serving President of the GAA), the stadium hosts major hurling matches and is home to the Kilkenny hurling team. It opened in 1927 replacing St. James Park. Martin Storey
Martin Storey (born 28 September 1964) is an Irish former hurler who played as a centre-forward at senior level for the Wexford county team. Regarded as one of the greatest Wexford players of all-time, Storey made his first appearance for the team during the 1986 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement before the 2001 championship. During that time he won one All-Ireland medal, two Leinster medals and three All-Star awards. At club level Storey was a five-time county club championship medalist with Oulart–The Ballagh. In retirement from playing Storey has become involved in team management and coaching. After serving as a selector at club level, he subsequently served as trainer of the Wexford senior camogie team and manager of the Wexford minor hurling team.
