1998 Newcastle Supplementary Election
The 1998 Newcastle supplementary election was held on 21 November 1998 to elect the next member for the division of Newcastle in the Australian House of Representatives, following the death of a candidate during the 1998 federal election campaign. Background Australian Democrats candidate Kaye Westbury died on 1 October, two days before the federal election. As it was after the close of nominations, the election was declared 'failed' and a supplementary election had to be held. The Liberal Party, who had Clive Jensen as their candidate, chose not to contest the supplementary election. The Division of Newcastle is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. Geography Since 1984, federal electoral division boundaries in Australia have been determined at redistributions by a redistribution committee appointed by the Australian Electoral Commission. Redistributions occur for the boundaries of divisions in a particular state, and they occur every seven years, or sooner if a state's representation entitlement changes or when divisions of a state are malapportioned. History The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. 1998 Australian Federal Election
The 1998 Australian federal election was held to determine the members of the 39th Parliament of Australia. It was held on 3 October 1998. All 148 seats of the House of Representatives and 40 seats of the 76-seat Senate were up for election. The incumbent centre-right Liberal/National Coalition government led by Prime Minister John Howard of the Liberal Party and coalition partner Tim Fischer of the National Party defeated the centre-left Australian Labor Party opposition led by Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, despite losing the nationwide popular and two-party preferred vote. Entering parliament at this election were future Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, future Liberal deputy leader and future Minister of Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop, and future Speaker Anna Burke. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party dissenting splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. The party would retain a presence in the Senate for the next 30 years, at its peak (between 1999 and 2002) holding nine out of 76 seats, though never securing a seat in the lower house. Allan Agapitos Morris (born 26 July 1940) is a former Australian politician. Born in Waratah, New South Wales, he was educated at the University of Newcastle and became a computer programmer. Ivan Welsh
Ivan Joseph Welsh (25 February 1940 – 15 March 2007) was an Australian politician. Born in Newcastle, Welsh attended Newcastle Boys' High School from 1952 to 1955 and served in the army from 1958 to 1967, including periods in Malaya (1958–60) and Vietnam (1965–66) as a Linguist and Intelligence officer. In 1961, he married Lorraine Gay Cox. After his military service concluded, he became a restaurateur, caterer and salesman, and in 1984 was elected to Lake Macquarie City Council, becoming mayor in 1987. In 1988, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as an Independent, representing the seat of Swansea. He held the seat until his defeat by the Labor candidate Don Bowman in 1991, in which year he also lost the mayoralty.
