1998 Melanesia Cup
The Melanesia Cup 1998 was the sixth Melanesia-wide football tournament ever held. It took place in Santo, Vanuatu and five teams participated: Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu and served for the second time as Oceania Nations Cup qualifyer. The teams played each other according to a round-robin format with Fiji winning the tournament for the third time and qualifying to the Oceania Nations Cup 1998 along with Vanuatu. 1994 Melanesia Cup
The Melanesia Cup 1994 was the fifth Melanesia-wide tournament ever held. It took place in Solomon Islands and five teams participated: Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu and server for the first time as Oceania Nations Cup qualifyer. The teams played each other according to a round-robin format with Solomon Islands winning the tournament for the second time and qualifying to the Oceania Nations Cup 1996. Fiji National Football Team
The Fiji national football team is Fiji's national men's team and is controlled by the governing body of football in Fiji, the Fiji Football Association. The team plays most of their home games at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Fiji first participated in FIFA World Cup qualification in 1982; since 1990 Fiji have attempted to qualify for each World Cup without success. Their best result was a final round appearance in 2010. The national team also represents Fiji at the OFC Nations Cup having appeared in eight out of ten previous tournaments. Fiji's best result is a third-place finish at the 1998 and 2008 editions. Espiritu Santo (, ; ) is the largest island in the nation of Vanuatu, with an area of and a population of around 40,000 according to the 2009 census. The six participating teams were Australia and New Zealand who qualified as of right, Fiji and Vanuatu who qualified from the Melanesia Cup, and Tahiti and the Cook Islands who qualified from the Polynesia Cup. Vanuatu National Football Team
The Vanuatu national football team is the national team of Vanuatu and is controlled by the Vanuatu Football Federation. History It was known as the New Hebrides national football team until the New Hebrides became Republic of Vanuatu in 1980. It finished fourth in the OFC Nations Cup in 1973, 2000, and 2002. In the 2004 Oceania Nations Cup, Vanuatu beat New Zealand 4–2, preventing the regional powerhouse from making the final and, consequently, the running for the 2006 World Cup. Vanuatu caused another shock in the 2007 South Pacific Games by knocking out the Solomon Islands for bronze medal and also enable to enter the second stage of qualification for the OFC Nations Cup and consequently a chance with a playoff for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010. Oceania Nations Cup
The OFC Nations Cup is an international association football tournament held among the OFC member nations. It was held every two years from 1996 to 2004; before 1996 there were two other tournaments held at irregular intervals, under the name Oceania Nations Cup. No competition was held in 2006, but in the 2008 edition, which also acted as a qualification tournament for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup and for a play-off for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the New Zealand national football team emerged as winners. Historically, a very large gulf separated Australia and New Zealand from the smaller island competitors, and little attention was paid to the tournament by the rest of the football world. 2000 Melanesia Cup
The Melanesia Cup 2000 was the seventh and the last Melanesia-wide tournament ever held. It took place in Fiji and five teams participated: Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu and served for the third time as an Oceania Nations Cup qualifier. The teams played each other according to a round-robin format with Fiji winning the tournament for the fifth time and qualifying to the Oceania Nations Cup 2000 along with Solomon Islands.
