1998 Massachusetts General Election
A Massachusetts general election was held on November 3, 1998 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The election included: * statewide elections for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, Secretary of the Commonwealth, treasurer, and auditor; * district elections for U.S. Representatives, State Representatives, State Senators, and Governor's Councillors; and * ballot questions at the state and local levels. Democratic and Republican candidates were selected in party primaries held September 15, 1998. Governor & Lieutenant Governor Republicans Paul Cellucci and Jane M. Swift were elected Governor and Lieutenant Governor, respectively, over Democratic candidates Scott Harshbarger and Warren Tolman, and Libertarian candidates Dean Cook and Eli Israel. 1998 United States Elections
The 1998 United States elections were held on November 3, 1998 in the middle of Democratic President Bill Clinton's second term. Though Republicans retained control of both chambers of Congress, the elections were unusual because this is the first midterm since 1934 that the president's party gained seats in the House of Representatives. Several Senate seats changed hands, but neither party made a net gain. In the House of Representatives, Democrats picked up five seats, marking the first time since the 1934 elections in which the incumbent president's party did not suffer losses in either house of congress. This also occurred in 2002. This is the most recent midterm election in which no chamber of Congress changed partisan control. Scott Harshbarger
Luther Scott Harshbarger (born December 1, 1941) is an American attorney and Democratic politician. He served as the 56th Massachusetts Attorney General from 1991 to 1999. In 1998, he was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Massachusetts but lost a close race to acting Governor Paul Cellucci. As of 2016, he served as senior counsel in the Boston law firm of Casner & Edwards, LLP. Early life and education Harshbarger was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Joe Malone (politician)
Joseph Daniel Malone (born November 18, 1954) is an American businessman, former Treasurer and Receiver-General of Massachusetts, and a former member of the Republican Party. In 2010, Malone ran for the Republican nomination for Congress in Massachusetts's 10th congressional district. In 2013, he announced he was leaving the Republican party to become an Independent. Newton is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is approximately west of downtown Boston. Newton resembles a patchwork of thirteen villages, without a city center. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the population of Newton was 88,923. History Newton was settled in 1630 as part of "the newe towne", which was renamed Cambridge in 1638. Lois Pines is an American politician who served in the Massachusetts General Court and was a candidate for statewide office four times. Early life Pines was born on August 16, 1940 in Malden, Massachusetts. She graduated from Barnard College in 1960 and then attended Boston University School of Law, but did not graduate. In 1963 she graduated from the University of Cincinnati School of Law. Political career From 1972 to 1973, Pines was an at-large member of the Newton, Massachusetts Board of Aldermen.
