The House of Representatives of Belize is one of two chambers of the National Assembly of Belize, National Assembly, the other being the Senate of Belize, Senate. It was created under the Constitution of Belize, 1981 constitution. Members are commonly called "Area Representatives." Area Representatives are elected by winning a majority of votes in their respective Constituencies of Belize, constituencies under the First-past-the-post voting, first-past-the-post system. The body is directly descended from the British Honduras Legislative Assembly created in 1954 with nine elected members. Manuel Sosa (judge)
Sir Manuel Sosa CBE (born 1950) is a former president of the Belize Court of Appeal, a position he held from 3 January 2011 to 24 December 2020, the longest term of any holder of that office. Career Sosa was called to the Belize Bar in 1976. He then served as an attorney in private practice until 1998, in the interim also taking a position on the Belize Advisory Council from 1987 to 1997 and temporarily serving as a Supreme Court of Belize justice in 1993. In 1998, he was named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Belize in a controversial appointment by outgoing United Democratic Party PM Manuel Esquivel which was made right before the Belizean general election, 1998. He succeeded George B. Singh, who with his failing health in mind was transferred to a less demanding position as a Justice of Appeal, only to pass away by March 1999. Belize Elections And Boundaries Commission
The Belize Elections and Boundaries Commission is the primary electoral body in Belize. It supervises all local and national elections. The commission also establishes the boundaries of Belize's electoral divisions. Formation and duties The EBC was formed in 1978 to oversee Belizean elections according to the Representation of the People Act. This Act became part of the Belize Constitution in 1981. The commission maintains a database of Belizean voters and periodically informs the nation on the state of the voter's list. It also occasionally makes proposals to revise boundaries in order to maintain near equality in voting divisions. There are currently 31 electoral divisions in Belize. Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson (25 July 1923 – 3 October 2001) was a Belizean newspaper editor, activist and politician. He served in the House of Representatives of Belize as member for the Albert constituency from 1965 to 1998 and twice as a minister. Goldson was a founding member of both of Belize's current major political parties, the People's United Party (PUP) in the 1950s and the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the 1970s. He was also the leading spokesman of the hardline anti- Guatemalan territorial claims National Alliance for Belizean Rights party in the 1990s.
