1998 Algarve Cup
The 1998 Algarve Cup was the fifth edition of the Algarve Cup, an invitational women's association football tournament. It took place between 15 and 21 March 1998 in Portugal with Norway winning the event for the fourth time in its history defeating Denmark, 4-1, in the final-game. The USA ended up third defeating Sweden, 3-1, in the third prize game. Format The United States returned to the tournament, replacing Iceland. The eight invited teams were split into two groups that played a round-robin tournament. On completion of this, the fourth placed teams in each group would play each other to determine seventh and eighth place, the third placed teams in each group would play each other to decide fifth and sixth place, the second placed teams in each group would play to determine third and fourth place and the winners of each group would compete for first and second place overall. Marianne Iren Pettersen (born 12 April 1975 in Oslo) is a Norway, Norwegian Association football, footballer. Christin Lilja (born 7 January 1975) is a Swedish former footballer. She was a member of the Sweden national team that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Women's Euro 1997. Julie Maurine Foudy ( ; born January 23, 1971) is an American retired soccer midfielder, two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist. She played for the United States women's national soccer team from 1988 to 2004. Foudy finished her international career with 274 caps and served as the team's captain from 2000 to 2004 as well as the co-captain from 1991 to 2000. Paderne is a village and Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish in the municipality (''concelho'') of Albufeira Municipality, Albufeira, in the Portugal, Portuguese region of Algarve. Penalty Shootout (football)
A penalty shoot-out (officially kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method in association football to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as extra time (if used) have expired. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each team has five shots which must be taken by different kickers; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable lead. If scores are level after five pairs of shots, the shootout progresses into additional " sudden-death" rounds. Balls successfully kicked into the goal during a shoot-out do not count as goals for the individual kickers or the team, and are tallied separately from the goals scored during normal play (including extra time, if any). Victoria Svensson
Victoria Margareta Sandell Svensson (born 18 May 1977) is a Swedish football manager and former player. Nicknamed Vickan, she was team captain on the Swedish women's national team and Djurgårdens IF Dam, captaining the national team during the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup, and is one of the most merited Swedish footballers of all time. She was originally known as Victoria Svensson, and then Victoria Sandell Svensson after marrying Camilla Sandell in April 2008 and adding her surname to her own. Anne Dot Eggers Nielsen (born 6 November 1975) is a Danish former football midfielder and journalist. She most recently played for Brøndby and won over 100 caps for the Danish national team. After the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup she and her Danish teammates accused the Chinese hosts of harassment and covert surveillance prior to China's first round match against Denmark.
