The 1997–98 Turkmenistan Higher League (Ýokary Liga) season was the sixth season of Turkmenistan's professional football league. Eight teams competed in 1997. Köpetdag Aşgabat won the championship with 4 matches to spare, having a 16-point lead over Nisa Aşgabat. Köpetdag Aşgabat
The Köpet Dag, Kopet Dagh, or Koppeh Dagh ( tk, Köpetdag; fa, کپهداغ), also known as the Turkmen-Khorasan Mountain Range, is a mountain range on the border between Turkmenistan and Iran that extends about along the border southeast of the Caspian Sea, stretching northwest-southeast from near the Caspian Sea in the northwest to the Harirud River in the southeast. In the southwest it borders on the parallel eastern endings of the Alborz mountains being together part of the much larger Alpide belt. The highest peak of the range in Turkmenistan is the Mount Rizeh (Kuh-e Rizeh), located at the southwest of the capital Ashgabat and stands at . Nisa Aşgabat is a Turkmen football club based in Aşgabat. They relegated from the top division in Turkmen football in 2006 and currently play in the second division, the Birinji liga. FC Bagtyyarlyk-Lebap
FC Lebap is a Turkmenistan football club based in Türkmenabat. Since 2015 they play in the second division, the Birinji liga. Their home stadium is Türkmenabat Stadium which can hold 10,000 people. History The club takes part in the championship of Turkmenistan since 1992. From the 1996 the name of the club added Eskavatorshik. In the winter break Championship 1997–98 club changed its name to Jeyhun. Since 2002, the club was called Garagum. That year the team won the Cup of Turkmenistan, and among the leading players were Vitaly Alekperov, Zarif Ereshev, Yazguly Hodjageldiev, Berdy Nurmuradov, Nikolay Yermilov (goalkeeper, which reflected two penalties in the shoot-out in the Cup final). Physical culture and sports football club Merw ( tk, link=no, Merw bedenterbiýe-sport futbol kluby), also known as Merw Mary, is a Turkmen professional football club based in Mary. They play in the national top division; the Ýokary Liga. Their home stadium is Mary Stadium. Football Club Şagadam ( tk, Şagadam futbol kluby) is a Turkmen football club based in Türkmenbaşy, Balkan Region. The team compete in Ýokary Liga, the top division in Turkmenistan football league system. The club was founded in 1949 and home matches are played at Şagadam Stadium, their original home ground History The football club was founded in 1949 by the Complex of Oil Refineries in Krasnovodsk (Turkmen SSR).
