During the 1997–98 English football season, Barnsley competed in the Premier League. Season summary 1997–98 was the first top-flight season in Barnsley's 102-year history, and, despite some courageous performances, their stay among the elite lasted just one season. They suffered from horrendous defeats and the leakiest defensive record in the division, conceding 82 goals. Their start to the season was OK, losing two and winning two of their first four games at Crystal Palace and against Bolton Wanderers. However, they were in the bottom three virtually for the remainder of the season after the 1–4 defeat at Wimbledon, though they did enjoy some success in the FA Cup, knocking out Manchester United in the fifth round before bowing out to eventual runners-up Newcastle United in the quarter-final. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. In Barnsley, the population was 96,888 while the wider Borough has seen an increase of 5.8%, from 231,200 in 2011 census to 244,600 in 2021 census. Darren Barnard
Darren Sean Barnard (born 30 November 1971) is a former professional footballer, manager and coach. Barnard was a wing-back and midfielder from 1989 until 2010 in the Premier League for both Chelsea and Barnsley. He also played in the Football League for Reading, Bristol City and Grimsby Town before playing in the Conference National for Aldershot Town and finishing his career with Non-league Camberley Town. Born in Germany, he was capped 24 times for the Wales national team and eight times for the England U18. In 2007, while a player with Camberley Town, he became the club's technical director before becoming its first team manager in 2010. Georgi Hristov (Macedonian: Ѓорѓи Христов, also romanized as ''Gjorgji Hristov''; born 30 January 1976) is a Macedonian former professional footballer who played as a striker. Eric Tinkler (born 30 July 1970) is a South African football coach and former player who manages Cape Town City. Early and personal life Tinkler was born in Roodepoort. John Hendrie (Scottish Footballer)
John Grattan Hendrie (born 24 October 1963) is a Scottish former professional association footballer who played on the right wing or in attack. His career started at Coventry City but he moved to Bradford City, where he played 173 consecutive league games, winning one promotion and narrowly missing out on another. Following spells with Newcastle United and Leeds United, he moved to Middlesbrough and scored the final goal at Ayresome Park among his 44 goals for Boro. When he was replaced by Brazilian Juninho he moved to Barnsley where he finished his career and also served as manager. His uncle is another Scottish former pro footballer, Paul Hendrie.
