Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Serbia in December 1997, following the annulment of the results of the September–October elections due to low voter turnout. The result was a victory for Milan Milutinović of the Socialist Party of Serbia, who defeated Vojislav Šešelj in the second round. Milan Milutinović
Milan Milutinović ( sr-cyr, Милан Милутиновић; born 19 December 1942) is a Serbian politician who served as the president of Serbia from 1997 to 2002. He served as Secretary for Education and Science of Serbia (1977–82), Director of the National Library of Serbia (1983–87), Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Greece (1989–95), Yugoslavia's Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs (1995–97). After his presidential term expired in December 2002, he surrendered to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia where he was tried for war crimes. He was found not guilty on all charges on 26 February 2009. Education and Youth Milan Milutinović comes from an old Belgrade family. Vuk Obradović
Vuk Obradović (April 11, 1947 in the village of Kondželj, Yugoslavia – February 13, 2008 in Belgrade) was a Serbian general and politician. He was one of the leaders of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia in the Bulldozer Revolution in October 2000. Before his political career, he was a professional soldier who later became the youngest general in the Yugoslav People's Army. He held a PhD in political studies, having defended a thesis on issues of nationalism in Yugoslav society. He resigned from the Army in May 1992, when the government refused to withdraw Yugoslav Army conscripts from fighting in Croatia. After leaving the army, he formed the Social Democracy political party and remained its leader for almost 10 years. In 1997, he stood as a candidate in the Yugoslav presidential elections winning 3.04% of the popular vote. The Liberal Democratic Party ( sr, Либерално демократска странка, Liberalno demokratska stranka, abbr. LDS), known as the Liberal Party ( sr, Либерална странка, Liberalna stranka, abbr. The Democratic Centre ( sr-cyr, Демократски центар, Demokratski centar; abbr. ДЦ, DC) was a political party in Serbia. It was founded in 1996 by Dragoljub Mićunović, former president of the Democratic Party (DS) when he left the DS. Dragoljub Mićunović
Dragoljub Mićunović ( sr-Cyrl, Драгољуб Мићуновић ; born 14 July 1930) is a Serbian politician and philosopher. As one of the founders of the Democratic Party, he served as its leader from 1990 to 1994, and as the president of the parliament of Serbia and Montenegro from 2000 to 2004. Early life Mićunović was born on 14 July 1930 in Merdare, Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He spent his childhood in Skopje where his father Mile worked as a civil servant. Following the annexation of parts of Yugoslavia by the Italian puppet Albanian Kingdom and Axis Kingdom of Bulgaria, he sought refuge in the Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia. After World War II, he resumed high school in Kursumlija and Prokuplje. Mićunović was then sentenced to 20 months of forced labour at Goli Otok island by the Yugoslav authorities. The Serbian Renewal Movement ( sr-cyrl, Српски покрет обнове, Srpski pokret obnove, SPO) is a liberal and monarchist political party in Serbia. History The Serbian Renewal Movement party was founded in 1990 through the merger of Drašković's faction from the Serbian National Renewal (SNO) party and Vojislav Šešelj's Serbian Freedom Movement. Šešelj left the party in 1991 after internal quarrels and founded the Serbian Radical Party. It was initially aligned with national conservatism and supported the territorial expansion of Serbia. The Democratic Movement of Serbia was formed in May 1992 as a political alliance made up primarily of SPO, New Democracy (ND), Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS). Vojislav Šešelj
Vojislav Šešelj ( sr-Cyrl, Војислав Шешељ, ; born 11 October 1954) is a Serbian politician, founder and president of the far-right Serbian Radical Party (SRS); he was convicted of war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Between 1998 and 2000, he served as the deputy prime minister of Serbia. He voluntarily surrendered to the ICTY in February 2003 but his trial did not begin until November 2007. Šešelj's trial was marred with controversy: he went on hunger strike for nearly a month until finally being allowed to represent himself, regularly insulted the judges and court prosecutors once proceedings commenced, disclosed the identities of protected witnesses and was penalized on three occasions for disrespecting the court.
