1997 Ottawa Municipal Election
The 1997 Ottawa municipal election was held on November 10, 1997, in Ottawa, Canada. Capital Ward councillor Jim Watson was easily elected mayor over two lesser known candidates. Mayor Jacquelin Holzman did not run for re-election. This would be the last election for the old city of Ottawa. Ottawans also elected members of Regional Council and Regional Chair of the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. For those results see 1997 Ottawa-Carleton Regional Municipality elections. Mayoral race Results by ward Watson easily won all 10 wards in the city, but was the weakest in the more Francophone wards of Rideau and Bruyère-Strathcona. Ottawa City Council
The Ottawa City Council (french: Conseil municipal d'Ottawa) is the governing body of the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is composed of 24 city councillors and the mayor. The mayor is elected at large, while each councillor represents wards throughout the city. Council members are elected to four-year terms, with the last election being on October 24, 2022. The council meets at Ottawa City Hall in downtown Ottawa. Much of the council's work is done in the standing committees made up of sub-groups of councillors. The decisions made in these committees are presented to the full council and voted upon. The ''Ottawa Citizen'' is an English-language daily newspaper owned by Postmedia Network in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. History Established as ''The Bytown Packet'' in 1845 by William Harris (journalist), William Harris, it was renamed the ''Citizen'' in 1851. The newspaper's original motto, which has recently been returned to the editorial page, was ''Fair play and Day-Light''. The paper has been through a number of owners. In 1846, Harris sold the paper to John Bell (journalist), John Bell and Henry J. Friel. Robert Bell (1821-73), Robert Bell bought the paper in 1849. In 1877, Charles Herbert Mackintosh, the editor under Robert Bell, became publisher. In 1879, it became one of several papers owned by the Southam Newspapers, Southam family. Allan Higdon
Allan L. Higdon is a former Ottawa City Councillor and acting mayor of Ottawa. He served on council from 1994 through 2000. Born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, Higdon immigrated to Canada with his family in 1957 and settled in Kingston, Ontario. He received a BA from Queen's University in English and History, a B.Ed from the University of Toronto, and also became an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (ARCT). After graduation, Higdon worked with the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on a curriculum development project at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). He subsequently lived in Toronto and southeast Asia, later moving to Ottawa. Alta Vista-Canterbury Ward
Alta Vista Ward (Ward 18) is a city ward in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada represented on Ottawa City Council. Alta Vista Ward was created prior to the 1966 election when Gloucester Ward was split in half due to population growth in the Alta Vista area. Until the 1972 elections, the ward was represented by two councillors (then called aldermen). Prior to the 1980 election, the Ward was split in half, with the western half remaining as Alta Vista ward and the eastern half became Canterbury Ward. They were reunited prior to the 1994 Election and was known as Alta Vista-Canterbury Ward. During this time, on regional council it was known as just Alta Vista Ward. It was renamed to Alta Vista in 2000. The ward is located in Ottawa's southeast end, and covers the neighbourhoods of Eastway Gardens, Riverview, Alta Vista, Heron Gate and Sheffield Glen. Karin (Duncan) Howard is a lawyer and politician. She represented Mooney's Bay Ward (now River Ward) on Ottawa City Council, covering the south central area of the City. Shawn William Little (October 16, 1964 – November 24, 2012) was a political consultant and Ottawa City Councillor in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, for the urban Kitchissippi Ward, consisting of neighbourhoods west of the City Centre. He was born in Ottawa and raised in its Westboro neighbourhood, where he attended Woodroffe Avenue and Broadview Public elementary schools followed by Nepean High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Carleton University, and a diploma in health sciences from Humber College. He wrote articles for the Newswest community paper in its early days. He died in November 2012 while vacationing in Cuba. Elisabeth Arnold
Elisabeth Arnold (born 1959 in Ottawa) was an Ottawa City Councillor who represented Somerset Ward from 1994 to 2003. One of her accomplishments on council was spearheading the rebuilding of the Plant Recreation Centre. Arnold graduated from Lisgar Collegiate Institute and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Geography from Simon Fraser University and a Master's in Urban Planning from Queen's University. From 1979 to 1984 she was a member of the Canadian national canoe team. From 1986 to 1988 she was the coordinator for Housing Help, which provided help for people in regard to housing needs. Stéphane Émard-Chabot
Stéphane Émard-Chabot is a former Ottawa city councillor who has served as assistant dean of the University of Ottawa law school since 2001. A native of Sandy Hill, he has a B.Comm and law degree from Ottawa and a degree from École Supérieure de Commerce de Paris. After obtaining his degree he became a professor at La Cité collégiale and also head of the Action Sandy Hill community group. He was elected to city council in 1994 at age 28. Openly gay, one of the first issues the city council faced was whether to recognize Gay Pride Day. Richard Cannings (Ontario Politician)
Richard Cannings is a former Ottawa City Councillor, who served on council from 1991 to 2000. He represented By-Rideau Ward from 1991 to 1994 and then Rideau Ward until 2000. Cannings received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bishop's University and a Bachelor of Education from Dalhousie University. He was a teacher in Nova Scotia and Quebec. Diane Elizabeth Deans is a member of Ottawa City Council, Canada, representing Gloucester-Southgate Ward in the city's southeast, representing more than 49,500 residents.
