New York Underground Film Festival
The New York Underground Film Festival was an annual event that occurred each March at Anthology Film Archives in New York City from 1994 through 2008 founded by filmmakers Todd Phillips ('' Road Trip'', '' Old School'') and Andrew Gurland. After Phillips and Gurland turned the festival over to programmer Ed Halter, it became noted for documentary and experimental film programming, and occasionally courted controversy, particularly in its early years. Some of these have included: premiering the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) documentary, '' Chicken Hawk: Men Who Love Boys'', in 1994; premiering a film in 1995 that accused Quentin Tarantino of plagiarism; being protested by Reverend Fred Phelps in 2002 (apparently for not choosing to show a film about Phelps); and premiering a theatrical version of Brad Neely's Harry Potter parody ''Wizard People, Dear Reader'', which eventually led to action by Warner Brothers to suppress future theatrical performances of the wo ... Cutting Moments
''Cutting Moments'' is a 1997 short film written, produced and directed by Douglas Buck, in cooperation with The New School. The film was re-released in August 2004 as part of Buck's suburban holocaust collection ''Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America''. Plot In the center of a uniform, monotonous subdivision, married couple Sarah and Patrick have been living with their emotions kept isolated between themselves and their son, Joey. Patrick seems to be cold and harsh by ignoring Sarah's existence, and the affection Patrick once had for her has all but disappeared. It comes to the point that his sexual urges are manifested in his actions toward Joey. In one scene, Joey is playing outside and places two Power Rangers toys in a suggestive position on the ground. Sarah is left in bewilderment when she hears the discussion of her husband and son later that evening. Jeff Krulik
Jeff Krulik is a director of independent films and a former Discovery Channel producer. Krulik's work frequently explores the fringes of popular culture from an enthusiastic and appreciative point of view. He is best known for his 1986 documentary ''Heavy Metal Parking Lot,'' co-produced by John Heyn, a gently disturbing (but, for the most part, fun-loving) look into hard-rock fandom recorded at the Capital Centre parking lot in Landover, Maryland, before a Judas Priest concert. Most of the fans appear drunken and drugged, with "bare feet, muscle shirts, bare-chested, bleach blonde frizzy perms, mullets from hell, big hair, bad teeth, scar tissue, and by far the largest collection of late '70s Camaros ever seen in one location." Jon Moritsugu
Jon Moritsugu (born February 15, 1965) is an American cult-underground filmmaker. His movies are satiric, protopunk deconstructions of popular genres and formats with scabrous and pointedly garish results. The ''New York Times'' describes them as "funny, anarchic, provocative and exhilarating". Influenced by the nihilism of Jean-Luc Godard and Guy Debord, Moritsugu's films are often defined by their "lo-fi" aesthetic and were initially shot on 16mm film for a gritty, visceral quality. He states that he often "pay(s) less attention to narrative flow and storyline and put(s) more emphasis on sight, sound and spectacle" to create a movie that is "like a live punk/hardcore show." The works themselves are often absurdist comedies that feature actress, co-writer, stylist, and wife, Amy Davis. ''Heavy Metal Parking Lot'' is a 1986 Documentary film, documentary short produced by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn. The film features interviews with several small groups of young Heavy metal music, heavy metal fans gathered for a tailgate party in the parking lot outside the Capital Centre (Landover, Maryland), Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on May 31, 1986, as they prepare for a Judas Priest/Dokken concert being held there later that evening. Reputation By the early 1990s, ''Heavy Metal Parking Lot'' had become an underground film, underground cult-classic, usually traded on Bootleg recording, bootleg VHS videotapes. It was reportedly a favorite on the Nirvana (band), Nirvana tour bus, among many other bands. Due to growing popularity of the film, music copyright issues arose between the producers and Judas Priest, though they were eventually resolved. Todd Verow
Todd Verow (born November 11, 1966) is an American film director who resides in New York City. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the AFI Conservatory. With his creative partner James Derek Dwyer, he formed Bangor Films in 1995. He was also the cinematographer for Jon Moritsugu's film '' Terminal USA'' (1993). He has been called a veteran of the New Queer Cinema "New Queer Cinema" is a term first coined by the academic B. Matthew Harrison (director)
Matthew Harrison (born in New York City) is an American television and film director, producer and writer. He first came to prominence when his feature film ''Rhythm Thief'' was awarded Special Jury Recognition for Directing at the Sundance Film Festival. His first studio feature ''Kicked in the Head'' was executive produced by Martin Scorsese and released by Universal Studios. He directed episodes 1X11 and 1X12 of HBO's ''Sex and the City''. Early films Harrison attended PS 41 in downtown Manhattan where he began making 8mm films at age nine. During the 60's, 70's and 80's, Harrison made 8mm and S8mm short films. Joshua Matthew Becker (born August 17, 1958) is an American film and television writer and director and author whose credits include episodes of '' Xena: Warrior Princess'' as well as collaborations with Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi. Life and career Early life and education Josh Becker was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1958. He became fascinated with cinema after seeing '' How the West Was Won'' at age six. As a teenager, he made several Super-8 short films with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. He dropped out of high-school at age 16 and completed his GED, then attended several colleges (including Michigan State University), but did not complete his studies.
