1997 Honduran General Election
General elections were held in Honduras to elect a president and parliament on 30 November 1997. They were also the first elections in which the left wing Democratic Unification Party was allowed to stand. Carlos Roberto Flores of the Liberal Party was elected president, defeating Nora Gúnera de Melgar who was the first woman to stand for the Presidency. Major campaign issues were crime and rising living standards.Honduras

Carlos Roberto Flores
Carlos Roberto Flores Facussé (born 10 March 1950) is a Honduran politician and businessman who served as the President of Honduras from 1998 to 2002. A member of the Liberal Party, Flores was previously the President of the National Congress from 1994 to 1998. Background Flores Facussé is the son of Honduran journalist Oscar Flores Midence and Margarita Facussé de Flores, and is of Palestinian descent. He is the nephew of Miguel Facussé Barjum. He, his brother Oscar Flores and his sister Celsa Flores, an artist, all attended the American School of Tegucigalpa. He then earned a dual degree in industrial engineering and international economics and finance from Louisiana State University. He became a member of Phi Iota Alpha. Innovation And Unity Party
The Innovation and Unity Party—Social Democracy ( es, Partido Innovación y Unidad Social Demócrata, PINU-SD) is a social democratic political party in Honduras, established in 1970. PINU was created by Miguel Andonie Fernández as a democratic, moderate left-wing alternative to the two major parties and the military regime. 2001 elections At Congressional elections held 25 November 2001, PINU won 4 seats in the 128-member assembly. In the presidential contest the same day, Olban Valladares placed third in a five-man field, taking about 1.5% of the vote. This was Valladares' third attempt at the presidency, after participating in the 1993 and 1997 elections. 2005 elections In the legislative elections of 27 November 2005, the party won 2 out of 128 seats in the Congress. Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is a country in Central America. The republic of Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Its capital and largest city is Tegucigalpa. Honduras was home to several important Mesoamerican cultures, most notably the Maya, before the Spanish Colonization in the sixteenth century.
