1997 Croatian Chamber Of Counties Election
Elections for the Second Assembly of the Chamber of Counties of the Croatian Parliament were held in Croatia on 13 April 1997.Dieter Nohlen & Stöver, P (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p410 The result was a victory for the Croatian Democratic Union, which won 40 of the 63 elected seats. This was the last election for the Chamber of Counties, which was abolished through a constitutional amendment on 29 March 2001. UNTAES facilitated the conduct of elections in the United Nations protectorate region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia (1995–98), Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia. Results President Franjo Tuđman had the constitutional right to appoint up to five members of the Chamber of Counties. He chose to exercise that right by naming Ivan Aralica, Jovan Bamburač, Slobodan Lang, Vojislav Stanimirović (politician), Vojislav Stanimirović and Zlatko Vitez to the chamber. Background Under the new constitution adopted in 1990, the Croatian Parliament was bicameral. The lower house had been elected in 1992 Croatian parliamentary election, 1992 and its representatives had passed laws creating new territorial organisations of Croatia. This included counties that were to be represented by the upper house – the Chamber of Counties. Slobodan Lang (8 October 1945 – 23 February 2016) was a Croatian physician, professor, diplomat, Member of Parliament, politician and Adviser for Humanitarian Issues of the first Croatian president, Franjo Tuđman. Background and education Lang was born on 8 October 1945 in Zagreb. His father was a prominent Croatian university professor, Rikard Lang, and his mother was from the notable Sorkočević family of Dubrovnik. Lang's paternal grandfather Ignjat Lang was president of the Jewish community of Vinkovci and his grandmother Terezija was a housewife. In 1941, a Dominican priest Hijacint Bošković, attempted to rescue the Langs from Nazi persecution. Bošković traveled from Dubrovnik to Vinkovci with a special permit that allowed him to relocate the Langs to Dubrovnik. The Croatian Christian Democratic Union ( or HKDU) is a minor right-wing Christian-democratic political party in Croatia. It was founded in 1992 after the merger of Croatian Democratic Party (HDS) and the Croatian Christian Democratic Party (HKDS). Social Democratic Action of Croatia ( hr, Akcija socijaldemokrata Hrvatske or ASH) was a Croatian left-wing political party. It was founded by 1994 by members of Social Democratic Party of Croatia dissatisfied with the centrist policies of SDP leader Ivica Račan and his lack of criticism towards Franjo Tuđman. The party had high hopes of gathering support beyond disenchanted SDP voters after Croatian Spring leader Miko Tripalo left Croatian People's Party in order to join them. In 1994, they tried to force an all-left party coalition in Croatia for the upcoming elections. The idea was rejected by Ivica Račan and SDP so they failed to realise it. The Croatian Party of Pensioners ( hr, Hrvatska stranka umirovljenika or HSU) is a Croatian centre-left political party that is currently led by Veselko Gabričević. When the party was founded, few people took it seriously and many commentators speculated that the ultimate purpose of HSU was to take away pensioners' votes from rejuvenated SDP and thus help ruling HDZ remain in power. The Alliance of Primorje-Gorski Kotar ( hr, Primorsko-goranski savez or PGS) is a minor Croatian liberal regionalist political party of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The Croatian Peasant Party ( hr, Hrvatska seljačka stranka, HSS) is an agrarian political party in Croatia founded on 22 December 1904 by Antun and Stjepan Radić as Croatian Peoples' Peasant Party (HPSS). The Brothers Radić believed that the realization of Croatian statehood was possible within Austria-Hungary, but that it had to be reformed as a Monarchy divided into three equal parts – Austria, Hungary, Croatia.
