1997 Asian Badminton Championships
The 1997 Asian Badminton Championships was the 16th edition of the Badminton Asia Championships. It was held in Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from September 3 to September 5 with total prize money of 136,000 US Dollars. At the end of competitions, China took titles from four disciplines; Both the singles and Women's & Mixed doubles, while Indonesia won Men's doubles discipline. Stadium Negara is an indoor arena located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Background Stadium Negara is located about 2 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur City Centre, next to the Stadium Merdeka and Merdeka 118, Merdeka 118 building. Choong Tan Fook
Choong Tan Fook (born 6 February 1976) is a former badminton player from Malaysia. Choong is currently coaching the Hong Kong badminton team. Career overview Choong made his debut in Olympic Games in 2000 Sydney. Partnered with Lee Wan Wah, they advance to the semi finals stage, but lost to South Korean pair Lee Dong-soo and Yoo Yong-sung in the rubber game. The duo played in the bronze medal match against another South Korean Ha Tae-kwon and Kim Dong-moon, but lost in straight game with the score 2–15, 8–15. In 2004 Athens, Choong and Lee had a bye in the first round and defeated Pramote Teerawiwatana and Tesana Panvisvas of Thailand in the second. Zhang Jun (badminton)
Zhang Jun (; born November 26, 1977 in Suzhou, Jiangsu) is a former male badminton player from the People's Republic of China. He is now a coach with the Chinese national team following his retirement from international play. Career As a doubles specialist, the solidly built Zhang Jun won several international men's doubles titles with compatriot Zhang Wei including the Swiss (1998), China (2001), and Thailand (2005) Opens. However, the majority of his titles, and the most prestigious ones, came in mixed doubles with the formidable Gao Ling. These included consecutive gold medals at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, earned by surviving a number of tight matches, particularly in 2000 when they were on the verge of elimination in the semifinals. Etty Tantri
Eti Lesmina Tantra (; born 14 October 1975), is an Indonesian badminton player of Chinese descent. She has represented Indonesia and the United States in international tournaments. Career Tantri who affiliate with Tangkas club, was selected to join the national team in 1993. She won her first title in 1997 India Open in the women's doubles partnered with Cynthia Tuwankotta. Together with Tuwankotta, she also won the 1997 French Open, becoming the first Indonesians to win a women's doubles title, and at the 1997 Polish Open. Cynthia Tuwankotta (born 28 June 1977) is an Indonesian former badminton player who later represented Switzerland. Tuwankotta started playing badminton at aged six, and she won the junior title at her hometown Maluku when she was ten. She then selected to join Indonesia national team in 1994, and was part of the team for 6 years. In 2000, she moved to Switzerland and was part of the national team from 2000–2009. Huang Nanyan (, born April 11, 1977, in Guangxi) is a badminton player from the People's Republic of China. Career A women's doubles specialist, Huang won a number of top tier titles in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Dato' Lee Chee Leong (; born 22 October 1957) is a Malaysian politician from the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). He served as one-term Member of Parliament (MP) of Malaysia for Kampar constituency in Perak, Malaysia from March 2008 to May 2013. As MP, he was twice appointed a deputy minister, first at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from April 2008 to June 2010 and later at the Ministry of Home Affairs from June 2010 to May 2013.
