1997 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final
The 1997 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 110th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1997 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. Kerry bridged an 11-year gap, the longest in their history, helped by nine Maurice Fitzgerald points. Fitzgerald also broke Billy O'Shea's leg on the pitch. Mayo in their second Final appearance in a row, were hoping to bridge a gap that stretched all the way back to their All-Ireland football title winning team of 1951. They failed, and would lose again to Kerry in 2004 and 2006. Subsequent All-Ireland finals defeats followed for Mayo at the hands of Donegal in 2012 and Dublin in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2020 and Tyrone in 2021. The 1997 Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 111th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 11 May 1997 and ended on 28 September 1997. Meath entered the championship as the defending champions; however, they were defeated by Offaly in the Leinster final. On 28 September 1997 Kerry, the most successful county in Gaelic football history, claimed their 31st All-Ireland title - and their first since 1986 - with a 0–13 to 1–7 victory over Mayo. This year also saw Ulster's most successful county, Cavan, win their first provincial title since 1969. Maurice Fitzgerald (footballer)
Maurice Fitzgerald (born 1969) is an Irish Gaelic football selector and former player. His league and championship career at senior level with the Kery county team spanned fourteen seasons from 1988 to 2001. Born in Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Fitzgerald was born into a strong Gaelic football family. His father, Ned Fitzgerald, was an All-Ireland medal winner with Kerry in 1955 before later captaining the side in 1957. Fitzgerald's brother-in-law Colm O'Neill is a two-time All-Ireland medal winner with Cork, while his nephew, Shane O'Neill is a soccer player with Orlando City SC. Fitzgerald played competitive Gaelic football during his schooling at Cahersiveen CBS and won several county championship medals in various grades. He later played with University College Cork, winning a Sigerson Cup medal in 1987. 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final
The 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 64th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1951 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. Mayo and Meath met to decide the destination of the Sam Maguire Cup. Match Mayo won their second title in a row with goals by Tom Langan and Joe Gilvarry. This was Mayo's second consecutive All-Ireland football title. They have not won an All-Ireland football title since. It is said that a legendary curse overshadows Mayo football since 1951 - see Sports-related curses. 55 years later... Billy O'Shea
Billy O'Shea was a Gaelic footballer from Killorglin, County Kerry. He played with the Kerry intercounty team at all levels during the 1990s and with his club Laune Rangers. At inter-county level, O'Shea won Munster Championships at all levels, Minor in 1990, Under 21 in 1991 & 1992 and Senior in 1996 as captain and 1997. He also played in All Ireland final at all levels, losing Minor in 1990 and Under 21 in 1991. O'Shea won a Senior All Ireland medal in 1997 but was taken off early in the game after breaking his leg after a mix up with teammate Maurice Fitzgerald. Billy O'Shea had great success at club level with Laune Rangers. During much of his playing days, they were one of the top teams in Ireland. O'Shea won Kerry Senior Football Championship titles in 1989, 1993, 1995 and 1996, he also played in finals 2003 and 2004. O'Shea missed out on the 1997 loss. Gort ( or ) is a town of around 3,000 inhabitants in County Galway in the west of Ireland. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag.
