1996–97 Premier Soccer League
The 1996–97 Premier Soccer League, known as the 1996–97 Castle Premiership for sponsorship purposes, was the first season of the newly established top-flight professional football league in South Africa. The league was an 18-team competition established in 1996 by Irvin Khoza, Kaizer Motaung, Raymond Hack and Jomo Sono in conjunction with the South African Football Association and it would run parallel to the European football calendar. Season summary Manning Rangers comfortably finished top of the log to win the first PSL title ahead of several more fancied opponents. The ''Mighty Maulers'' dominated to such an extent that they finished eight points clear of second-placed Kaizer Chiefs and a further two ahead of Orlando Pirates. The ''Amakhosi'' had a more potent attack and a better defensive record than Rangers, and they lost fewer games, but their propensity to draw matches that they should have won cost them the trophy. Premier Soccer League
Premier is a title for the head of government in central governments, state governments and local governments of some countries. A second in command to a premier is designated as a deputy premier. Orlando Pirates Football Club (often known as "The Buccaneers") is a South African professional football club based in the Houghton suburb of the city of Johannesburg and plays in the top-tier system of Football in South Africa known as DStv Premiership. The team plays its home matches at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. The club was founded in 1937 and was originally based in Orlando, Soweto. National First Division
The National First Division (NFD), officially known as the Motsepe Foundation Championship for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest league of South African club association football, football after the South African Premier Division. Both the NFD and South African Premier Division are organised by the Premier Soccer League. Structure and rules Seasons 2007–2011 The restructured NFD was divided into two streams, one inland and another coastal – each of which consisted of 8 teams. The winners of the two streams played against each other in a 'final' at the end of the season – the winner of which was promoted to the PSL. 1998 African Cup Winners' Cup
The 1998 African Cup Winners' Cup was the twenty-fourth season of Africa's second oldest club football tournament organised by CAF. As before, the tournament was open to clubs that won their nation's premier domestic cup. Espérance of Tunisia won the cup after defeating Angola's Primeiro de Agosto 4-2 in a two-legged final. It was ''Espérance's'' first Cup Winners' Cup triumph and their fourth African club title while ''Primeiro de Agosto'' made their first appearance in a continental final.
