The 1996–97 Pilkington Cup was the 26th edition of England's premier rugby union club competition. Anglo-Welsh Cup
The Anglo-Welsh Cup (), was a cross-border rugby union knock-out cup competition that featured the 12 Premiership Rugby clubs and the four Welsh regions. It was a created as a replacement for the RFU Knockout Cup, which featured only English clubs. The competition was replaced by the Premiership Rugby Cup, involving only the 12 English Premiership clubs, beginning with the 2018–19 season. Neil Back
Neil Antony Back MBE (born 16 January 1969) is a former international rugby union footballer for England and the British & Irish Lions who also played for Nottingham RFC, Leicester Tigers, and captained both England and Leicester during his career. Following World Cup victory with England in 2003, he took on the role of Player/Defensive Coach for Leicester Tigers until he retired, following an illustrious 17-year first class playing career. One of his final games saw him become the oldest test British Lion in the history of the game, in the first test match verses New Zealand, on the 2005 tour. During his international career he played in three World Cups, 1995, 1999, and 2003, where he was an integral part of the 2003 World Cup winning side. He also went on three Lions tours: the victorious tour to South Africa in 1997, and to Australia in 2001 and New Zealand in 2005. Steve Hackney
Stephen Thomas Hackney (born 13 June 1968) is an English former rugby union player. A wing he played in England's top division of domestic rugby union for Nottingham and Leicester Tigers, and also played in the second division for Moseley and Waterloo. He played for England A in 1993, scoring four tries in a match against and played for in the 1995 Hong Kong Sevens tournament. He started in the 1997 Heineken Cup Final for Leicester Tigers. Career Hackney joined Nottingham in 1988 after developing a good reputation in university rugby playing for Loughborough Students. He played three seasons in England's top division before moving to fellow midlands side Leicester. Hackney made his Leicester debut on 14 August 1991 against Edmonton during the club's 1991 pre-season tour to Canada. Dorian West
Dorian Edward West MBE (born 5 October 1967) nicknamed "Nobby" is a former English international rugby union footballer. West was born in Wrexham, Wales, but his family moved to England when he was young. Before professionalism, he was a police officer with the Leicestershire Constabulary's armed response unit. He made his debut at Leicester Tigers and played for them as a flanker but a move to Nottingham in 1991 saw him convert to hooker. He rejected the offer of a trial for Wales. He moved back to Leicester in 1996 where he became an understudy to Richard Cockerill. His form improved and he was noticed by England coach Clive Woodward during matches when Cockerill was away on international duty. This resulted in him being picked on the England bench for the 1998 match against France, coming on to replace Cockerill. Dean Richards (rugby Union)
Dean Richards (born 11 July 1963) is a rugby union coach and former player for Leicester Tigers, and British & Irish Lions. He was most recently the Director of Rugby at Newcastle Falcons, a position he held for ten years between 2012 and 2022. Richards was a number eight and played 314 games for Leicester Tigers between 1982 and 1997, he was captain as Leicester won the 1994-95 Courage League and the 1997 Pilkington Cup, and also played as Leicester won the inaugural English league title in 1987-88 and the 1993 Pilkington Cup. He played 48 times for between 1986 and 1996, a world record number of caps for his position at the time, including the 1987, 1991 and 1995 Rugby World Cups, and represented the British Lions on their 1989 tour to Australia and 1993 tour to New Zealand playing in six international matches. Aadel Kardooni ( fa, عادل کردونی, born 17 May 1968 in Tehran) is a British-Iranian former professional rugby union player. He is the first Iranian rugby union player to ever play professionally. Rob Liley
Robert James Liley (born 3 April 1970) is an English former rugby union player. A fly half he played professionally for Sale, Leicester Tigers, Harlequins, Wakefield and Doncaster. He was the starting fly half for Leicester in the 1997 Heineken Cup Final. Career Leicester Liley moved to Leicester Tigers in 1996 to join his brother John. He made his debut on 25 August 1996 against Boroughmuir at Welford Road and scored 27 points, a club record for a player on debut. He was Leicester's starting fly half in every game during the 1996-97 Heineken Cup, scoring a try in the quarter final victory over Harlequins. Graham Rowntree
Graham Christopher Rowntree (born 18 April 1971) is an English rugby union former player and current head coach of Irish club Munster. He played loosehead prop for Leicester Tigers and England. He was capped 54 times for England, despite having to compete for his position with one of the world's most capped forwards, Jason Leonard. Rowntree was born in Stockton-on-Tees. He was educated at John Cleveland College, Hinckley, Leicestershire, which has also produced other rugby union players. Richard Cockerill
Richard Cockerill (born 16 December 1970) is an English rugby union coach and former player, he was the national team's interim head coach between Eddie Jones and Steve Borthwick. He played as a hooker, spending the majority of his career at Leicester Tigers where he played 255 games over two spells, he won 27 caps for and was included in the 1999 Rugby World Cup squad. He won five league titles, two European Cups and two domestic cups as a player. Following his retirement from playing in 2005 Cockerill became Leicester's forwards coach, becoming head coach in 2009. He led Leicester to Premiership titles in 2009 and 2010, his first two years in charge, and a third title in 2013. Darren Garforth
Darren Garforth (born 9 April 1966) is a former international rugby union player who played tighthead prop for Leicester Tigers and England. Garforth was born in Coventry, signed for Leicester Tigers and made his Leicester debut against Northampton Saints in 1991. He would go on to make over 300 appearances for the club. Wearing the C shirt, as part of the ABC club with Graham Rowntree (A) and Richard Cockerill (B). He was an important part of Tigers side which won the English league four times and the Heineken Cup twice. Garforth made his England debut on 15 March 1997 against Wales.
