1996–1997 Vendée Globe
The 1996–1997 Vendée Globe is a non-stop solo Round the World Yacht Race for IMOCA 50 and IMOCA 60 class yachts this is the third edition of the race starting on the th November 1996 from Les Sables-d'Olonne. Summary Another heavy-weather start in the Bay of Biscay knocked Nándor Fa and Didier Munduteguy out of the race early, and several others returned to the start for repairs before continuing. The rest of the fleet raced to the Southern Ocean, where a second attrition began: Yves Parlier and Isabelle Autissier broke rudders, leaving Christophe Auguin to lead the way into the south. The race was won by Christophe Auguin. Catherine Chabaud, sixth and last, was the first woman to finish the race. Les Sables-d'Olonne
Les Sables-d'Olonne (; French meaning: "The Sands of Olonne"; Poitevin: ''Lés Sablles d'Oloune'') is a seaside town in Western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. A subprefecture of the department of Vendée, Pays de la Loire, it has the administrative level of commune. On 1 January 2019, the municipalities of Olonne-sur-Mer, Château-d'Olonne and Les Sables-d'Olonne merged, retaining the latter name. Location and geography Les Sables-d'Olonne is a seaside town in western France, on the Atlantic Ocean. Gerry Roufs
Gerry Roufs (1953 – January, 1997), was a Canadian competitive sailor. Sailing career Born in Montreal, Canada. In 1978, Gerry Roufs, along with crew Charles Robitaille placed second at the 470 class World Championships held in Marstrand, Sweden. Death He disappeared at sea in his boat, ''Groupe LG 2'' in January 1997, in the South Pacific Ocean, while taking part in the 1996–1997 edition of the Vendée Globe, the round-the-world, single-handed, non-stop yacht race. Roufs was in second place in the race when his Argos position-indicating beacon ceased to transmit. His boat, ''Groupe LG 2'', was found on the coast of Chile in July 1997. His last known position was , 369 nm south of Point Nemo, the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility.
