The 1996 Volta a Catalunya was the 76th edition of the Volta a Catalunya cycle race and was held from 13 June to 20 June 1996. The race started in Castell-Platja d'Aro, Platja d'Aro and finished in Igualada. The race was won by Alex Zülle of the ONCE (cycling team), ONCE team. Alex Zülle
Alex Zülle (born 5 July 1968) is a Swiss former professional road bicycle racer. During the 1990s he was one of the most successful cyclists in the world, winning the 1996 and 1997 Vuelta a España, taking second place in the 1995 and the 1999 Tour de France. He was world time-trial champion in Lugano in 1996. Biography Early career Zülle was born and brought up in Wil in the canton of St. Gallen, son of a Swiss father, Walter Zülle and Wilhelmine, from Brabant, Netherlands. As a child he wanted to be a skier but at 18 he was injured in an accident. He began cycling in the Netherlands for rehabilitation before giving up because it was too windy. His father, having bought cycling equipment, persuaded him to give cycling another go when they returned to Switzerland. Paolo Savoldelli
Paolo Savoldelli (born 7 May 1973 in Clusone, province of Bergamo) is a former Italian road racing cyclist and winner of the 2002 and 2005 Giro d'Italia. Savoldelli was a climber but known for his fast downhill riding. He is nicknamed ''Il Falco'' ("the falcon"). His downhill skills won him the 2005 Giro. His descent of the Colle delle Finestre before the final ascent to Sestriere in the penultimate stage, closed a gap to Gilberto Simoni, preserving his lead and giving him the win. On 20 July 2005, Savoldelli won the 17th stage of the Tour de France. He led in the 2007 Giro d'Italia, but worked for teammate Eddy Mazzoleni. Savoldelli retired from competitive professional cycling at the end of the 2008 season. He did not leave the cycling world however, as he embarked on a career covering the sport in the media. Marco Saligari (born 18 May 1965 in Sesto San Giovanni) is a directeur sportif and former Italian road bicycle racer who raced during the 1990s. Since 2002, Saligari has served as manager of the Landbouwkrediet (formerly ''Colnago-Landbouwkrediet'') squad. In a marathon breakaway, Saligari won stage 17 at the 1993 Giro d'Italia by escaping after only riding twelve kilometers of the 211 km stage. He finished alone atop the 1,815 meter climb of Valle Vairata after dropping countrymen Gianluca Bortolami and Mauro Santaromita with 38 km remaining. Bo Hamburger (born 24 May 1970 in Frederiksberg) is a Danish former professional road racing cyclist. He retired in 2006. Biography After ending his career, Hamburger started a building company and a bike shop. He was the leading directeur sportif for in 2013 and 2014. Doping He was fired from Team CSC in 2001, after a positive EPO test. He was later cleared legally since the B test was below the limit, but still higher than normal. Since then, the Danish Cycle Union refused to let Hamburger represent Denmark. Hamburger fought the exclusion through legal means. In his book ''Den største pris - en cykelrytters bekendelser'' (''The Greatest Cost - Confession of a Cyclist'') released in Denmark on 7 November 2007, he admitted to using EPO and human growth hormone from 1995 to 1997. ONCE cycling team, () also known as Liberty Seguros, Liberty Seguros–Würth and in succession in its final year, Astana–Würth and Astana was a Spanish cycling team. It competed in the UCI ProTour circuit. Patrick Jonker (born 25 May 1969) is a retired Australian road bicycle racer from Dutch and German ancestry. He was a professional rider from 1993 to 2004. Jonker represented Australia twice at the Summer Olympics, in 1992 and 1996. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. The highlights of his career include wins in the 1997 Route du Sud, the 1999 Grand Prix de Wallonie and ending his career with a high profile victory in the 2004 Tour Down Under. Igualada () is a municipality in the province of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. It is located on the left bank of the Anoia River and at the western end of the Igualada-Martorell-Barcelona Railway.
