1996 SANFL Season
The 1996 South Australian National Football League season was the 117th season of the top-level Australian rules football competition in South Australia. The season opened on 30 March and concluded on 6 October with the Grand Final, in which went on to record its 34th premiership, defeating by 36 points. , , also made the top (final) five teams and participated in the finals series. , , , all missed the top five, with the last of those finishing last to record its 18th wooden spoon. The 1996 SANFL season marked the end of an era for Port Adelaide being their last year in the SANFL, as the Port Adelaide Football Club joined the AFL in 1997. Peter Vardy (footballer)
Peter Vardy (born 26 January 1976) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Adelaide Football Club and Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A small forward, Vardy started his career at Adelaide where he was an AFL Rising Star nominee in 1997. A key member on the forward flank for the team, he broke his collarbone in the semi-final against , but managed to kick an extremely important goal in the process while riding a rough collision. This meant he was unable to participate in the last two finals of the Crows' first premiership. The following season he enjoyed another stellar year, accumulating 44 goals and being involved a premiership as the Crows won another premiership, kicking two goals from the wing in the grand final. Fabian Francis (born 24 October 1973) is a former Australian rules football, rugby league footballer, most notable for his professional career with the Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League. Early life Born in Darwin into a family of Torres Strait Islander descent, Francis grew up playing both rugby league and Australian rules football. Francis played in the Litchfield Rugby League Club's premiership team in 1992. David Brown (Australian Footballer Born 1969)
David Brown (born 29 September 1969) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club and Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Originally from Port Adelaide, Brown was chosen as one of the Adelaide Crows initial recruits for the Crows' first season in the AFL in 1991 AFL season, 1991. After 69 games in six seasons with Adelaide, Brown was recruited by Port Adelaide to be part of its own inaugural AFL squad in 1997 AFL season, 1997. Brown played two seasons with Port's AFL team, playing 22 matches before being named captain of the Port Adelaide Magpies in 1999. Darren Smith (born 9 February 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) and Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Port Adelaide (1984–1990) Smith arrived in Adelaide from the Eyre Peninsula and after playing under-age football, he broke into the Port Adelaide seniors in 1984. Warren Gary Tredrea (born 24 December 1978) is a former Australian Rules Footballer with the Port Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and former Weekday Sports Presenter on ''Nine News Adelaide''. Scott Lee (born 5 June 1963) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and Central District Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Lee, originally from Yallourn, started out at Hawthorn in the 1980s but couldn't find his way into the firsts and had just one night premiership game to show for his time at the club. He got a clearance to Central District in 1985 and gave them good service as a defender, winning 'Best and Fairests' in 1987 and 1990, before getting his second chance at playing AFL when Adelaide recruited him for their inaugural season. Stephen Schwerdt (born 28 May 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Adelaide in the Australian Football League The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Prospect Oval
Prospect Oval is a sports stadium located at Menzies Crescent, Prospect, South Australia. The oval has a capacity of 20,000 people with seated grandstands holding approximately 2,000. An unusual feature of the oval is that it is laid out askew from the conventional orientation of Australian rules football and cricket ovals, with the goal posts located at the South-Western and the North-Eastern ends, and the cricket pitch running in the same direction. All other grounds in the SANFL run in a north-south direction.
