Russian Premier League
The Russian Premier League (RPL; russian: Российская премьер-лига; РПЛ), also written as Russian Premier Liga, is the top division professional association football league in Russia. It was established at the end of 2001 as the Russian Football Premier League (RFPL; russian: Российская футбольная премьер-лига; РФПЛ) and was rebranded with its current name in 2018. From 1992 through 2001, the top level of the Russian football league system was the Russian Football Championship (russian: Чемпионат России по футболу, ''Chempionat Rossii po Futbolu''). There are 16 teams in the competition. As of the 2021/22 season, the league had two Champions League qualifying spots for the league winners and league runners-up, and two spots in the UEFA Conference League were allocated to the third- and fourth-placed teams. FC Lokomotiv Nizhny Novgorod was a Russian football club based in Nizhny Novgorod. They spent eight seasons in the Russian Premier League. History Early years The team of the railway workers was founded in Nizhny Novgorod in 1916. Later it was known as ''Chervonka'' (1918-1922), ''Spartak'' (1923-1930), ''Tyaga'' (1931), ''Zheleznodorozhniki'' (1932-1935). In 1936 the team was renamed ''Lokomotiv'' and retained this name until 2002, when it was renamed ''Lokomotiv-NN''. During the existence of the USSR the club was a part of the Lokomotiv Voluntary Sports Society. Modern Lokomotiv Lokomotiv was mostly known for its football school and did not play in the Soviet league until 1987. In 1989, Lokomotiv won promotion to the First League and spent two years there. Valentin Kozmich Ivanov (russian: Валентин Козьмич Иванов, 19 November 1934 – 8 November 2011) was a Russian footballer who played as a midfielder. He was the co- leading scorer at the 1962 World Cup, and the co-1960 European Nations' Cup top scorer. Ivanov appeared 59 times for the Soviet Union, scoring 26 goals. He is the Soviet national football team's third-highest goalscorer of all time, behind only Oleg Blokhin and Oleg Protasov. One of the finest Russian players ever, Ivanov was noted for his pace, dribbling quality and technical ability. Ivanov's four goals in the 1962 World Cup saw him named the tournament's top-scorer, along with five other players; he also scored two in the 1958 edition. The club are members of the Russian Premier League, and play at the Rostov Arena. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Club Association suspended the team. Pavel Fyodorovich Sadyrin (russian: Павел Фёдорович Садырин; 18 September 1942 – 1 December 2001) was a Soviet and Russian footballer and manager. Career Sadyrin played as a midfielder for Zvezda Perm and Zenit Leningrad. As a manager, he led Zenit to their only Soviet championship in 1984. In 1991, he won the cup and the last Soviet title with CSKA Moscow. Sadyrin also won promotions to the top flight with CSKA (in 1989) and Zenit (in 1995). Sadyrin was the manager of Russia national team in 1992-1994 and led Russia at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. In 2001, he died of cancer.
