1996 Purdue Boilermakers Football Team
The 1996 Purdue Boilermakers football team represented Purdue University in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. They played their home games at Ross–Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana and competed in the Big Ten Conference. The team attempted to build from its second best season (win wise) in its 5-year football history under head coach Jim Colletto, and they failed starting the season 0-3 and averaging under 7 points per game. Over the final eight games the Boilermakers went 3-5 however, ending the season with a 3–8 record and failing to qualify for a bowl game for the twelfth straight year. The Boilermakers also failed to win a road game. However, several individuals excelled. Brian Alford received numerous post-season accolades including First Team All-Big Ten honors by both the coaches and the media, as well as breaking the Purdue record for most receiving touchdowns in a single season. Jim Colletto
Jim Colletto (born October 4, 1944) is a former American football player and coach. He attended Monterey High School (1958–1962) where he was an all conference baseball and football player and starter on the varsity basketball team. At UCLA Colletto was all conference in baseball and football; where he led the team in rushing as a sophomore and as a senior defensive end was captain of the UCLA team that beat Michigan State in the 1966 Rose Bowl. He served as the head football coach at California State University, Fullerton from 1975 to 1979 and at Purdue University from 1991 to 1996, compiling a career college football record of 38–80–4. Colletto was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League, replacing Mike Martz, who was fired on January 2, 2008. The 1996 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represented the University of Notre Dame in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team was coached by Lou Holtz and played its home games at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame participated in the Emerald Isle Classic (Billed as the ''Shamrock Classic'' that year). The game was played in Dublin on November 2 at Croke Park, where Notre Dame beat Navy by a score of 54–27. Despite finishing the regular season 8-3, Notre Dame did not play in a bowl game. The 1996 Ohio State Buckeyes football team represented the Ohio State University in the 1996 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team's head coach was John Cooper. The Buckeyes played their home games in Ohio Stadium. The team finished the season with a win–loss record of 11–1, and a Big Ten Conference record of 7–1.
