1996 Paris RER Bombing
On 3 December 1996 an IED detonated on the southbound tracks of the Port-Royal Réseau Express Régional (RER) station in Paris, France. Four people were killed in the bombing: two French citizens, a Moroccan and a Canadian. Following the bombing, French officials activated the "Vigipirate" nationwide security plan drawn up a year earlier in the wake of a series of bombings by the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria (GIA). The plan included police and army patrols in sensitive public areas and spot checks across the country. Port-Royal Station
Port-Royal is a French railway station on the RER B line in Paris. It is located in the 5th arrondissement, not far from its tripoint border with the 6th and 14th arrondissements. It is named after Port-Royal Abbey, Paris. History The station opened on 31 March 1895, as part of the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans extension of the Ligne de Sceaux from Denfert-Rochereau station north to Luxembourg station. The station has a unique architectural style with the station house located above the tracks on a metal footbridge. This particular arrangement was necessary because of a lack of space at the station site. Today, the station house retains its original appearance with its platforms protected by glass canopies, but the ends of the platforms have been extended to accommodate longer trains. Jean-François Ricard
Jean-François Ricard (born 14 July 1956) is a French magistrate, and since 25 June 2019 the first prosecutor of the National Terrorism Prosecution Office (; PNAT) a '' parquet'' for the prosecution of terrorism in France. Early life and education Ricard was born in Boulogne-Billancourt ( Hauts-de-Seine), France. Career Ricard began his career in December 1982 as a judge in Arras ( Pas-de-Calais). He then was a judge in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis), beginning in December 1986, before joining the judiciary in Paris. Ricard worked as an investigating judge in charge of terrorism cases for 12 years. With Jean-Louis Bruguière, Ricard was in charge of the file of the 1996 Paris RER bombing on the Réseau Express Régional in Saint-Michel. Ricard left his role as an investigating judge in 2006.
