1996 European Canoe Slalom Championships
The 1996 European Canoe Slalom Championships took place in Augsburg, Germany between August 29 and September 1, 1996, under the auspices of the European Canoe Association (ECA). It was the inaugural edition. The races were held on the Eiskanal which also hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics when canoe slalom made its first appearance at the Olympics. Miroslav Šimek
Miroslav Šimek (, born 27 January 1959 in Turnov) is a Czechoslovak-Czech slalom canoeist who competed from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won two silver medals in the C2 event, earning them in 1992 and 1996. Šimek also won a complete set of medals in the C2 event at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold in 1993, a silver in 1991, and a bronze in 1997. He earned seven other medals in the C2 team event (3 golds and 4 silvers). He won the overall World Cup title in the C2 category six consecutive times between 1990 and 1995. Sławomir Mordarski (born 4 January 1979 in Nowy Sącz) is a Polish slalom canoeist who competed at the international level from 1994 to 2006. He won three medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships with a gold (C1 team: 1999) and two bronzes (C2 team: 2002, 2003).
