1996 Belarusian Premier League
The 1996 Belarusian Premier League was the sixth season of top-tier football in Belarus. It started on 16 April and ended on 10 November 1996. Dinamo Minsk were the defending champions. Team changes from 1995 season Bobruisk, who finished in the last place, have relegated and immediately dissolved after 1995 season. They were replaced by the newcomers Naftan-Devon Novopolotsk, who won the First League in 1995. Dvina Vitebsk changed their name to Lokomotiv-96 Vitebsk and Shinnik Bobruisk were renamed to Belshina Bobruisk. Torpedo Mogilev changed name to Torpedo-Kadino Mogilev in the middle of the season (in September). Overview The championship was played as a double round-robin tournament in the summer season of 1996. MPKC Mozyr won the champions title for the 1st time while spending only two seasons in Premier League and qualified for the next season's Champions League. Belarusian Premier League
The Belarusian Premier League or the Vyšejšaja Liha or the Vysheyshaya Liga ( be, Вышэйшая ліга, russian: Высшая лига, "Top League") is the top division of professional football in Belarus, and is organized by the Belarusian Football Federation. The number of teams in the competition has varied over the years from as high as 17 (1992–93 season) to as low as 11 (2012). As of 2016, the league included 16 teams. Each team plays every other team twice during the course of the season. At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest points are automatically relegated to the Belarusian First League, while the third worst team plays a promotion-relegation playoff against the third best team from the second tier. The top two teams from the Belarusian First League automatically win promotion to the Premier League. FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk
FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk ( be, ФК Шахцёр Салігорск, ''FK Shakhtsyor Salihorsk'') is a Belarusian Premier League football club, playing in the city of Soligorsk (Salihorsk) . History The club was founded in 1961. During Soviet era Shakhtyor Soligorsk was playing in top or second division of the Belarusian SSR league, occasionally dropping to lower tiers (Minsk Oblast league) for a short time. In 1971, Shakhtyor absorbed two other local Soligorsk teams (Khimik and Gornyak). Their best results came at the end of Soviet days, when the team finished as league runners-up twice (1988, 1990) and won the Belarusian SSR Cup three times (1985, 1986, 1988). FC Neman Grodno ( be, ФК Нёман Гродна, ''FK Nyoman Hrodna''; russian: ФК Неман Гродно) is a Belarusian football club from the city of Grodno, named after the Neman River and was founded in 1964. Since 1992, the team has participated in the top league of Belarus. FC Torpedo-Kadino Mogilev
FC Torpedo Mogilev is a Belarusian football club based in Mogilev. History The club was formed in 1959 as Kirovets Mogilev. During 1962–1963, the team played in the Belarusian SSR League, before submerging to regional and city level competitions. In 1979, the club was renamed to Torpedo Mogilev and joined the Belarusian SSR top league once again. They were third in 1979 and won their only championship title in 1982. The team began playing in the Belarusian Premier League in 1992. The first two seasons were most successful when they finished 7th (1992) and 8th (1992–93). FC Dnepr Mogilev ( be, ФК Дняпро Магілёў, ''FK Dniapro Mahilyow''; russian: ФК Днепр Могилёв) is a Belarusian football team, playing in the city of Mogilev. Their home stadium is Spartak Stadium. History Dnepr Mogilev was founded in 1960 under the name Khimik Mogilev and began playing in the Class B (second tier league) of Soviet championship, which at the time consisted of over 140 teams split into several regional zones. In 1963, the team relegated to the third tier due to league structure reorganization and changed their name to Spartak Mogilev. In 1970, they dropped to the fourth tier, but the next year were brought back to the third, both times due to further league reorganizations. FC Ataka Minsk was a Belarusian football club based in Minsk. They disbanded in 1998. History FC Ataka-407 Minsk was formed in 1986. In 1992 the team started playing in Belarusian Second League. In 1993, the team was renamed to Ataka-Aura. The Belarusian First League is the second tier of professional football in Belarus. It was created in 1992, following the Belarusian independence. History and format The typical format of the league involves 16 clubs playing a double round-robin tournament over 30 matchdays (with the exception of shortened 1992 and 1995 seasons, which were a single round-robin tournaments). On several occasions the number of participating teams was smaller (15 or 14), due to last minute withdrawals and no teams available for replacement. 1996–97 Belarusian Cup
The 1996–97 Belarusian Cup was the sixth season of the annual Belarusian football cup competition. Contrary to the league season, it is conducted in a fall-spring rhythm. It began on 20 July 1996 with the first of five rounds and ended on 25 May 1997 with the final at the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk. FC MPKC Mozyr were the defending champions, having defeated FC Dinamo Minsk in the 1996 final, but were knocked out in the second round by FC Dinamo-93 Minsk, the eventual finalists. FC Vitebsk ( be, ФК Віцебск, FK Viciebsk, russian: ФК Витебск) is a Belarusian football club based in Vitebsk. The club plays in the Belarusian Premier League, the top division in Belarusian football. Their home stadium is Vitebsky Central Sport Complex. History The club was founded in 1960 as Krasnoye Znamya Vitebsk (''Red Flag Vitebsk''). They began playing in Soviet Class B (second-tier league) the same year. After three seasons, they relegated to the third tier. 1995 Belarusian First League
1995 Belarusian First League was the fifth season of 2nd level football championship in Belarus. It started in July and ended in November 1995. Team changes from 1994–95 season The two best teams of 1994–95 First League ( MPKC Mozyr and Ataka-Aura Minsk) were promoted to Belarusian Premier League. They were replaced by two lowest placed teams of 1994–95 Premier League ( Gomselmash Gomel and Lokomotiv Vitebsk). The three lowest-placed teams of the last season ( ZLiN Gomel, AFViS-RShVSM Minsk and Stroitel Vitebsk) relegated to the Second League. Stroitel Vitebsk eventually disbanded before the start of the season.
