The 1996 Ameritech Cup was a women's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois in the United States that was part of Tier II of the 1996 WTA Tour. It was the 25th edition of the tournament and was held from October 28 through November 3, 1996. Second-seeded Jana Novotná won the singles title. Jennifer Capriati
Jennifer Maria Capriati (born March 29, 1976) is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. A member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, she won three singles Grand Slam titles and was the gold medalist at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Capriati set a number of youngest-ever records at the start of her career. She made her professional debut in 1990 at the age of 13 years, 11 months, reaching the final of the hard-court tournament in Boca Raton, Florida. She reached the semifinals of the French Open in her debut and later became the youngest-ever player to reach the top 10, at age 14 years, 235 days, in October of that year. Following a first-round loss at the 1993 US Open, she took a 14-month break from competitive pro tennis. Ameritech Cup
The Ameritech Cup (known also as the Virginia Slims of Chicago and the Avon Championships of Chicago) is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament held every year from 1971 until 1997 in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Its sponsors were Virginia Slims from 1971 to 1978 and again from 1983 to 1994, Avon from 1979 to 1982 and Ameritech from 1995 to 1997. The tournament was classified as Tier III in 1988-1989, Tier I in 1990 and Tier II until 1997, and was played on indoor carpet courts. Martina Navratilova was the most successful player at the tournament, winning the singles competition 12 times and the doubles competition 7 times. Nana Smith (born Nana Miyagi; 10 April 1971) is an American-born tennis player who played for Japan. Career Miyagi, a former top-15 player in doubles, played at all the Grand Slam tournaments in both singles and doubles – the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. She scored her first top-10 win in singles in 1994, over then-world No. 8, Lindsay Davenport, and also scored wins over many top-20 ranked players, including Martina Hingis. Angela Lettiere Simon (born April 4, 1972) is a former professional tennis player from the United States. Biography Lettiere was raised in Vero Beach, Florida, before moving to Sunrise, Florida in 1990 to train at the local tennis academy. She finished her schooling at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. College She went on to attend the University of Georgia. In 1994 she was a member of Georgia's NCAA championship winning team and claimed the NCAA singles championship, beating UCLA's Keri Phebus in the final. While at Georgia, she won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's best female tennis player in 1994. It is one of the fastest court types, second only to grass courts. The use of carpet courts in ATP Tour competitions ended in 2009. In women's tennis, no WTA Tour tournaments have used carpet courts since the last edition of the Tournoi de Québec in 2018.
