The 1996 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 109th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1996 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. It went to a replay and was eventually won by Meath, with Mayo losing. Neither team was expected to make the final as the competition got underway; Meath were expected to lose to Carlow in their first game of the Leinster Senior Football Championship. However, it would be for the most significant breach of on-field discipline in the sport's history that the 1996 All-Ireland final would be remembered. 1996 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1996 Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 110th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 12 May 1996 and ended on 29 September 1996. Dublin entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Meath in the Leinster final. On 29 September 1996, Meath won the championship following a 2–9 to 1–11 defeat of Mayo in a replay of the All-Ireland final. This was their sixth All-Ireland title and their first in eight championship seasons. Mayo's Maurice Sheridan was the championship's top scorer with 1-33. John Madden (Gaelic Footballer)
John Earl Madden (April 10, 1936 – December 28, 2021) was an American football coach and sports commentator in the National Football League (NFL). He served as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, who he led to eight playoff appearances, seven division titles, seven AFL/AFC Championship Game appearances, and the franchise's first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI. Madden, who never had a losing season, holds the highest winning percentage among NFL head coaches who have coached at least 100 games. Gerry McEntee
Gerry McEntee (born 19 October 1955) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for the Meath county team. He played club football for Nobber GFC. Career During his playing career he helped his club Nobber to rise from Junior "B" to the top level, the Meath Senior Football Championship. He experienced success while playing inter-county football during the 1980s and early 1990s on the Meath teams managed by Seán Boylan, for whom he usually played at midfield. He won two All-Ireland Senior Football Championships in 1987 and 1988, as well as five Leinster Senior Football Championships, two National Football Leagues and a Centenary Cup Medal. The 1999 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 112th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1999 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. Meath captained by Graham Geraghty defeated Cork to claim the last All-Ireland football final of the Millennium. Pre-match Meath had "unquestionably" played more key games at Croke Park in the 1990s than any other Leinster county. Cork's Seán Óg Ó hAilpín went into the match aiming to emulate Teddy McCarthy's achievement of winning two senior All-Ireland championship medals in the same season. Brendan Reilly (Meath Gaelic Footballer)
Brendan Reilly (born 20 August 1969) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for club side St. Peter's, Dunboyne and at inter-county level with the Meath senior football team. He usually lined out as a forward. Career Born in Dunboyne, County Meath, Reilly's father, Jim Reilly, was an All-Ireland-winner with Meath in 1954. He first came to prominence at club level with the St. Peter's, Dunboyne club and, in a hugely successful club career, won county championship medals in every adult grade. Reilly was 18-years-old when he made his debut with the Meath senior football team during the National Football League in late 1987 and was a member of the extended panel when Meath beat Cork in the 1988 All-Ireland final. A penalty kick (commonly known as a penalty or a spot kick) is a method of restarting play in association football, in which a player is allowed to take a single shot at the goal while it is defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. It is awarded when an offence punishable by a direct free kick is committed by a player in their own penalty area. Trevor Giles
Trevor Giles is an Irish former Gaelic footballer for the Meath county team. Regarded as one of the best players of his generation, he plays club football for Skryne. He came to prominence first when he won an All Ireland minor medal with Meath in 1992. In 1993 he moved on to the Under 21 team and won an All Ireland title coming on as a sub in the final. He would go on to win 2 All Ireland Senior medals, 3 Leinster Senior Football Championship medals & 1 National League Medals. He usually played in the half forward line for Meath. Ray Dempsey
Ray Dempsey is a Gaelic football manager and former player. He has been manager of the Limerick county team since 2022. Dempsey played for Mayo in the 1989 and in the 1996 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Finals. Colm Coyle
Colm Coyle (born 26 February 1963), is a former Gaelic footballer and former manager from County Meath, Ireland. He was manager of the senior Meath county team from September 2006 to July 2008, having previously played for the county. Playing career Coyle won a Leinster Minor Football Championship medal with Meath in 1980. He made his senior debut for Meath in the 1981/82 National League. He enjoyed much success play inter-county football in the eighty's & ninety's on the Meath teams managed by Sean Boylan.
