The 1995–96 Scottish Inter-District Championship rugby union Scottish Inter-District Championship was the last between the Scottish districts at amateur level, before the game turned professional in Scotland in the summer of 1996; although later amateur Inter-District championship matches were also played in seasons when the Scottish professional districts were playing in the Welsh-Scottish League. The Scottish Exiles team won this last amateur era district tournament. Indeed, it was the Scottish Exiles second only outright title in their history, since the Scottish Inter-District Championship began in 1953-54. However, as not a 'native' district they could not compete in European competition, as it was decided that Scottish districts would be entered in the new European tournaments. Edinburgh District (rugby Union)
Edinburgh District was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Edinburgh area, as well as others from the rest of east central Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Lothian regional council area. Historically the Edinburgh District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The Edinburgh District rugby union team was founded in 1872. The team played the world's first inter-district match that year against Glasgow District rugby union team. The amateur Edinburgh District side evolved into the professional Edinburgh Rugby side in 1996; one year after rugby union allowed professionalism in 1995. Glasgow Warriors
Glasgow Warriors are a professional rugby union side from Scotland. The team plays in the United Rugby Championship league and in the European Professional Club Rugby tournaments. In the 2014–15 season they won the Pro12 title and became the first Scottish team to win a major trophy in rugby union's professional era. Martin Waite
Martin Waite (born 17 April 1971 in Scotland) is a Scottish former Scotland A international rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors and Caledonia Reds at the Flanker position. Waite began his professional career with Caledonia Reds in 1996 before they merged with the Glasgow side in 1998. Waite then joined Glasgow Caledonians, now Glasgow Warriors for the next three seasons. He played for amateur side Watsonians RFC, joining them from the professional Glasgow club for the new season 2001–02. Nevertheless, he remained included in the Glasgow side's Heineken Cup squad of 2001-02 while still a Watsonian player. Waite retired from rugby union in 2002 after a back injury. David John McIvor (born 29 June 1964 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland) is a Scottish rugby coach who won six caps for Scotland playing as a flanker. Rugby Union career Amateur career McIvor began his rugby career with Glenrothes. He moved to Edinburgh Academicals in 1988. In 1996, he moved back to play for Glenrothes. Willie Anderson (born 17 September 1967 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland) is a former Scotland international rugby union player for Glasgow Warriors, who played at the Tighthead Prop position. Mark McKenzie (born 2 December 1971) is a former Scotland 'A' international Scottish rugby union player. He played for Caledonia Reds and Glasgow Warriors in Scotland, and for CS Bourgoin-Jallieu and Nice in France. McKenzie's career spanned the amateur and professional era. In 1989, he was playing for Glasgow District Under 18s. He won the Division One league title in 94/95 with Stirling County. On Scotland's rugby professionalism in 1996, McKenzie then played for Caledonia Reds and won the Scottish Inter-District Championship with them in the 1996-97 season; their first ever title. He played in the Heineken Cup with Caledonia Reds. When Caledonia Reds merged with Glasgow Rugby in 1998, to form Glasgow Caledonians, now Glasgow Warriors, McKenzie found himself without a professional club.
