1995 Paris–Roubaix
The 93rd running of the Paris–Roubaix single-day cycling classic, often known as the ''Hell of the North'', was held on 9 April 1995. Italian Franco Ballerini won his first of two victories, finishing two minutes ahead of the pursuing group after a 30 km solo. Andrei Tchmil won the sprint for second place before Johan Museeuw. The race started in Compiègne and finished on the velodrome of Roubaix, overing a distance of . The race served as the third leg of the 1995 UCI World Cup. 91 of 178 riders finished. Gianluca Bortolami
Gianluca Bortolami (born 28 August 1968) is an Italian former professional road racing cyclist. Bortolami's greatest feats was capturing the monumental classic Tour of Flanders in 2001 and winning the 1994 UCI Road World Cup season championship. He is the namesake of Bortolami's Pizzeria in Vancouver, Washington. Bortolami was born in Locate di Triulzi, province of Milan. He competed in the road race at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He turned professional in 1990 and rode for Lampre. He finished 75th in the 2002 Tour de France, 46th in the 1997 Tour, 13th in the 1994 Tour with one stage win, and 73rd in the 1993 Tour. He was tested positive for cortisone in 2003 during Three Days of De Panne. He was suspended for six months by the Italian cycling federation. Rolf Aldag (born 25 August 1968 in Beckum, West Germany) is a former professional road bicycle racer who rode for Team Telekom from 1993 to 2005. He raced in 10 Tour de France, 1 Giro d'Italia and 5 Vuelta a España. Prior to joining Telekom, he raced with Helvetia. Frédéric Moncassin
Frédéric Moncassin (born 26 September 1968) is a French former road racing cyclist. He turned professional in 1990 and retired in 1999. He competed in the men's individual road race at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Moncassin was a strong roadman-sprinter known for his tussles with other riders in the last metres of a race. He clashed with Tom Steels and Mario Cipollini among others. He won 30 races and led the Tour de France for a day in 1996. He also came close to winning the Tour of Flanders and Paris–Roubaix. Eric Vanderaerden
Eric Vanderaerden (born 11 February 1962) is a retired road cyclist from the town of Lummen, Belgium. He was a considerable talent, winning the prologue time trial of the Vuelta a España in his debut year of 1983. During the 1983 Tour de France he also won the prologue and held the yellow jersey for two days. During the 1984 Tour de France he won two stages, including the final stage of the race which finished on the Champs Elysees in Paris. His participation in the 1985 edition was a strong one, beating the eventual Tour winner Bernard Hinault in a time trial stage. He held the yellow jersey again during this tour, this time for three days. The following year, he won the green jersey. In subsequent years, he won two monument races: in 1985, at 23, he won the storm ridden edition of the Tour of Flanders, and in 1987 he won Paris–Roubaix. Viatcheslav Vladimirovich Ekimov (Russian Вячеслав Владимирович Екимов; born 4 February 1966), nicknamed ''Eki'', is a Russian former professional racing cyclist. A triple Olympic gold medalist, he was awarded the title of Russian Cyclist of the Century in 2001. Biography Ekimov was born in Vyborg, and started training as a cyclist at age 12 with a bicycle school affiliated with the famous centre of Aleksandr Kuznetsov. He trained in Leningrad at Lokomotiv and later Armed Forces sports society during the Soviet era. Ekimov won three Olympic gold medals: in the track team pursuit in Seoul (1988) for the USSR, and in an upset, in the road time trial in Sydney (2000) for Russia. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Ekimov won the silver medal for Russia in the men's road individual time trial, losing to American Tyler Hamilton. History In 1995 Australian Bill Mitchell, a keen cyclist and professor of economics at the University of Newcastle, created the website titled "Bill’s Cycling Racing Results and News" after finding there was a need for fast-breaking news and race results in English-speaking countries. In 1999 Sydney-based publishing company Knapp Communications purchased the website from Mitchell, and in July 2007 they sold it to British publisher Future plc for £2.2m. In July 2014 it was bought by Immediate Media Company, along with the print-only ''Procycling'' magazine. In February 2019, Immediate Media sold its cycling titles back to Future. Franco Ballerini
Franco Ballerini (11 December 1964 – 7 February 2010) was an Italian road racing cyclist. Born in Florence, his greatest exploits as a rider came with his two victories in the cycling classic Paris–Roubaix, riding for the Mapei cycling team. In 1993 he was beaten on the line by Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle in an exciting Paris–Roubaix finale. Also on his palmarès or list of accomplishments there are other one-day races such as Omloop Het Volk and Paris–Brussels. Ballerini then became manager of the Italian national cycling squad, winning the 2002 World Championships with Mario Cipollini and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with ex-teammate Paolo Bettini. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 he won the World Championships with Paolo Bettini and Alessandro Ballan. On 7 February 2010, Ballerini, a rallying fan, was seriously injured during a race in Larciano where he was participating as co-driver/navigator for professional driver Alessandro Ciardi.
