1995 Palanca Awards
The 45th Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature was held to commemorate the memory of Don Carlos Palanca Sr. through an endeavor that would promote education and culture in the country. The Palanca Hall of Fame was also established in 1995 and is presented to a Palanca awardee who has achieved the distinction of winning five first prizes in the regular categories. It awarded the distinction to seven writers who have already reached the milestone, including Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo, Buenaventura S. Medina Jr., Rolando S. Tinio, Rene O. Villanueva, Gregorio C. Brillantes, Cirilo F. Bautista, and Jesus T. Peralta. Peralta clinched his fifth first prize way back in 1978 for “Exit No Exit” under the Full-Length Play category. Palanca Awards
The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines", it is the country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige. Winning works are entered in the competition either as previously published pieces or in manuscript form. The Palanca Awards, organized by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, is one of the Philippines' longest-running awards programs. It was named after Carlos Palanca Sr. History Palanca Awards was established in 1950 to inspire and recognize Philippine writers, including poets, playwrights and screenwriters, and writers for children. In the 1960s, the Palanca Awards Committee started to fund the publication of Palanca Award-winning plays, and production funds were committed in 1975. Merlinda Bobis (born 25 November 1959) is a contemporary Filipina-Australian writer and academic. Biography Born in Legazpi City, in the Philippines province of Albay, Merlinda Bobis attended Bicol University High School then completed her B.A. at Aquinas University in Legazpi City. She holds post-graduate degrees from the University of Santo Tomas and University of Wollongong, and now lives in Australia. Written in various genres in both Filipino and English, her work integrates elements of the traditional culture of the Philippines with modern immigrant experience. Lilia Quindoza Santiago (February 5, 1949 – February 15, 2021) was a writer and academic in the Philippines. She was named ''Makata ng Taon'', "Poet of the Year," in 1989, and wrote the prize-winning novel ''Ang Kaulayaw ng Agila''. Her academic work focused on languages of the Philippines as well as gender and sexuality studies, and her scholarly publications included the seminal 2002 anthology ''Sa Ngalan ng Ina (In the Name of the Mother): 100 Years of Philippine Feminist Poetry, 1889-1989''.
