1994 Uruguayan General Election
General elections were held in Uruguay on 27 November 1994, alongside a double referendum.Dieter Nohlen (2005) ''Elections in the Americas: A data handbook, Volume II'', p494 The result was a narrow victory for the Colorado Party, which won the most seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate and received the most votes in the presidential election. Tabaré Vázquez of the Broad Front received the most votes of any presidential candidate. However, former president Julio Maria Sanguinetti returned to office by virtue of the Colorados receiving the most votes of any party. Under the multi-candidate Ley de Lemas system in effect at the time, the highest-finishing candidate of the party that won the most votes was elected president. Vázquez finished just 12,100 fewer votes than the combined vote for the runner-up National Party, even though he won over 121,000 more votes than Sanguinetti. Julio María Sanguinetti Coirolo (; born 6 January 1936 in Montevideo, Uruguay) is a Uruguayan politician, lawyer and journalist, who twice served as President of Uruguay (from March 1985 until March 1990, and again, from March 1995 until March 2000) for the Colorado Party (Uruguay), Partido Colorado. A lawyer and journalist by profession, he was born into a middle-class family of Italian origin from Genoa. He studied Law and Social Sciences at the University of the Republic. He received his law degree in 1961, and later combined his legal practice with work as a journalist. He had already been writing for the press, first in the weekly ''Canelones'' and later, since 1955, as a columnist for ''Acción'', a newspaper established by the then-President, Luis Batlle Berres, Luis Batlle, for which he covered events such as the Cuban Revolution (1959) and carried on until the 1970s. Roberto Canessa
Roberto Jorge Canessa Urta, M.D., (born 17 January 1953) is one of the 16 survivors of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in the Andes mountains on 13 October 1972, and a Uruguayan political figure. He was portrayed by Josh Hamilton in the 1993 feature film, ''Alive''. 13 October 1972 air crash At the time of the accident, Canessa was a 19-year-old medical student. His fiancée was Laura Surraco, the daughter of a doctor. He graduated from the Stella Maris College (Montevideo) and played for their alumni rugby team, Old Christians Club. Civic Union (Uruguay)
Civic Union ( es, Unión Cívica) is a small Uruguayan political party. It was founded in 1971 by dissidents of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) who did not want to join the Frente Amplio alliance. The party delivered a minister of defense in 1985, after parliamentary democracy was restored to Uruguay. The party participated in the 2004 presidential election. Rafael Michelini Delle Piane (born 30 October 1958 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan politician. He is currently Senator of the Republic of Uruguay as a member of the Frente Amplio party, and was the founder of New Space party. He was the seventh of ten children, and is the son of Zelmar Michelini, a former senator who was assassinated in Buenos Aires during Operation Condor. As a result, he has been active in human rights issues, primarily those stemming from the dictatorship. In the elections of 1984, the first since the end of the military dictatorship which had ruled Uruguay from 1973 to 1984, Michelini was elected to the city council in Montevideo running for the Party for the Government of the People. New Space () is a social democratic party in Uruguay. History The party was founded in 1994 by Senator Rafael Michelini. It was born as a split of the centrist Party for the Government of the People (''Partido por el Gobierno del Pueblo'', PGB), whose leader was the former Vice-President Hugo Batalla, when the party decided to join the traditional liberal Colorado Party for the 1994 Uruguayan general election. "New Space" had originally been the name of an electoral alliance formed after the more centrist elements of the Broad Front had left the centre-left alliance, which they deemed too strongly dominated by the Marxist elements, in 1989 and included notably the PGB and the Christian Democratic Party (PDCU). Carlos Julio Pereyra
Carlos Julio Pereyra Pereyra (15 November 1922 – 9 February 2020) was a Uruguayan schoolteacher, author and politician belonging to the National Party. Pereyra was born in Rocha. He had a long political career, serving as representative and longtime senator. In the 1971 elections he was the running mate of Wilson Ferreira Aldunate. Soon afterwards Pereyra was an underground leader of his party during the civic-military dictatorship. Once again elected senator in 1984, he ran for president in the 1989 and 1994 elections. Juan Andrés Ramírez is a Uruguayan lawyer, and a Senator of the National Party. Background Juan Andrés Ramírez was born in Montevideo, Uruguay on 11 October 1947. He studied law at University of the Republic, becoming a well-known civil lawyer, and soon after became a member of the National Party. In the 1989 general elections, he was elected as a Senator of the Herrerismo faction of the National Party. Interior Minister President Luis Alberto Lacalle selected him as Interior Minister of his government, so Ramírez did not take up his Senator post.
