Latin Music (genre)
Latin music (Portuguese and es, música latina) is a term used by the music industry as a catch-all category for various styles of music from Ibero-America (including Spain and Portugal) and the Latino United States inspired by Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese music genres, as well as music that is sung in either Spanish and/or Portuguese. Terminology and categorization Because the majority of Latino immigrants living in New York City in the 1950s were of Puerto Rican or Cuban descent, "Latin music" had been stereotyped as music simply originating from the Spanish Caribbean. The popularization of bossa nova and Herb Alpert's Mexican-influenced sounds in the 1960s did little to change the perceived image of Latin music. "Just Another Day" is a song by Cuban-American singer-songwriter Jon Secada. It was released in March 1992 as the lead single from his self-titled debut album (1992). Written by Secada and Miguel Morejon, the song reached number five on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and number two on the Adult Contemporary chart. It also peaked at number one in Sweden, at number two in Canada, and at number five in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. The song was also recorded in Spanish as "Otro día más sin verte", which topped the US ''Billboard'' Hot Latin Tracks chart, peaked at number one in Panama and Uruguay, and reached the top-five in Colombia, El Salvador and Mexico. Premio Lo Nuestro 1994
The 6th Lo Nuestro Awards ceremony, presented by the Univision, honored the best Latin music of 1993 and 1994 and took place on May 19, 1994, at a live presentation held at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. The ceremony was broadcast in the United States and Latin America by Univision. During the ceremony, twenty categories were presented. Winners were announced at the live event and included Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan and Tejano band La Mafia, each receiving three awards, and Luis Miguel and Wilfrido Vargas, each receiving two awards. Among its honors, Miguel won the award for "Pop Album of the Year," La Mafia for "Regional Mexican Album of the Year," and Estefan won the award for "Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year." The ''Billboard'' Latin Music Hall of Fame is a rarely presented honor presented by American magazine '' Billboard'' at the ''Billboard'' Latin Music Awards. The accolade was established in 1994 to recognize "artists who have achieved worldwide recognition for their work, transcending musical genres and languages". This includes artists who laid the "artistic foundation" for contemporary Latin music. Cachao
Israel López Valdés (September 14, 1918 – March 22, 2008), better known as Cachao ( ), was a Cuban double bassist and composer. Cachao is widely known as the co-creator of the mambo and a master of the descarga (improvised jam sessions). Throughout his career he also performed and recorded in a variety of music styles ranging from classical music to salsa. An exile in the United States since the 1960s, he only achieved international fame following a career revival in the 1990s. Born into a family of musicians in Havana, Cachao and his older brother Orestes were the driving force behind one of Cuba's most prolific Charanga (Cuba), charangas, Arcaño y sus Maravillas. As members of the Maravillas, Cachao and Orestes pioneered a new form of ballroom music derived from the danzón, the danzón-mambo, which subsequently developed into an international genre, mambo. Celia Cruz
Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso (21 October 1925 – 16 July 2003), known as Celia Cruz, was a naturalized Cuban-American singer and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century. Cruz rose to fame in Cuba during the 1950s as a singer of guarachas, earning the nickname "La Guarachera de Cuba". In the following decades, she became known internationally as the " Queen of Salsa" due to her contributions to Latin music. She began her career in her native Cuba, earning recognition as a vocalist of the popular musical group Sonora Matancera, a musical association that lasted fifteen years (1950-1965). The ''Billboard'' Latin Music Awards grew out of the ''Billboard'' Music Awards program from ''Billboard'' magazine, an industry publication charting the sales and radio airplay success of musical recordings. The ''Billboard'' awards are the Latin music industry’s longest running award. The award ceremonies are held during the same week as Latinfest+ (formerly known as the ''Billboard'' Latin Music Conference). The first award ceremony began in 1994. Latin Jazz
Latin jazz is a genre of jazz with Latin American rhythms. The two main categories are Afro-Cuban jazz, rhythmically based on Cuban popular dance music, with a rhythm section employing ostinato patterns or a clave, and Afro-Brazilian jazz, which includes samba and bossa nova. Afro-Cuban jazz "Spanish tinge"—The Cuban influence in early jazz and proto-Latin jazz African American music began incorporating Afro-Cuban musical motifs in the 19th century, when the habanera (Cuban contradanza) gained international popularity. The habanera was the first written music to be rhythmically based on an African motif. The InterContinental Miami is a hotel in Downtown Miami, Florida, United States. History It was opened in 1983 as the Pavillon Hotel, as part of developer Theodore Gould's waterfront Miami Centre project.
