1994 Dublin South-Central By-election
A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Dublin South-Central (Dáil constituency), Dublin South-Central constituency in Republic of Ireland, Ireland on 9 June 1994. It followed the resignation of Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) and Minister for Health (Ireland), Minister for Health John O'Connell (Dublin politician), John O'Connell on health grounds. The election was won by Dublin City Councillor and former TD Eric Byrne. This was the first time ever Democratic Left (Ireland), Democratic Left won a by-election. Among the candidates were Seanad Éireann, Senator and future TD Michael Mulcahy (politician), Michael Mulcahy, Brian Hayes (politician), Brian Hayes who would go on to serve as both a Minister of State (Ireland), Minister of State and Member of the European Parliament, MEP, Dublin City Councillor Joe Connolly and South Dublin County Councillor and future Senator Cáit Keane. 1992 Irish General Election
The 1992 Irish general election was held on Wednesday, 25 November, almost three weeks after the dissolution of the Dáil on 5 November. The 27th Dáil assembled at Leinster House on 14 December 1992, but a new Taoiseach was not elected. A new Fianna Fáil–Labour Party coalition government was appointed on 12 January 1993 with Albert Reynolds appointed again as Taoiseach. The general election took place in 41 Dáil constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in Dáil Éireann, under a revision in the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1990. Campaign The general election of 1992 was precipitated by the collapse of the Fianna Fáil–Progressive Democrats coalition government. Allegations of dishonesty at the Beef Tribunal forced Desmond O'Malley and his party to part ways with Albert Reynolds's Fianna Fáil. Dublin City Council ( ga, Comhairle Cathrach Bhaile Átha Cliath) is the authority responsible for local government in the city of Dublin in Ireland. As a city council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. Until 2001, the council was known as Dublin Corporation. The council is responsible for public housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture and environment. Dáil Constituencies
There are 39 multi-member electoral districts, known as Dáil constituencies, that elect 160 TDs (members of parliament), to Dáil Éireann, Ireland's lower house of the Oireachtas, or parliament, by means of the single transferable vote, to a maximum term of five years. Electoral law Article 16.2 of the Constitution of Ireland outlines the requirements for constituencies. The total number of TDs is to be no more than one TD representing twenty thousand and no less than one TD representing thirty thousand of the population, and the ratio should be the same in each constituency, as far as practicable, avoiding malapportionment. Under the Constitution, constituencies are to be revised at least once in every twelve years in accordance with the census reports, which are compiled by the Central Statistics Office every five years. List Of Dáil By-elections
This is a list of by-elections to Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas, the Irish legislature. By-elections in Ireland occur to fill vacant seats which can be caused by the death, resignation, disqualification or expulsion of a sitting Teachta Dála (member of parliament). Under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2011, the writ for the by-election must be issued within six months of the vacancy. There have been 138 by-elections since 1923, to fill 140 vacancies. 93 of these were caused by the death of a sitting Teachta Dála (TD). There were no by-elections during the 3rd, 7th, 9th, 11th, 22nd, 25th and 26th Dála. The longest period without a by-election was almost 10 years between 1984 and 1994. 1994 Mayo West By-election
A by-election was held in the Dáil Éireann Mayo West constituency in Ireland on 9 June 1994. It followed the resignation of Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) Pádraig Flynn after being appointed a European Commissioner. The election was won by Fine Gael Mayo County Councillor and future Minister Michael Ring. Among the candidates were Pádraig Flynn's daughter, Beverley Cooper Flynn and Jerry Cowley, both of whom would go on to serve as TDs, as well as Mayo County Councillor Johnny Mee.
