The 1993–94 WHL season was the 28th season for the Western Hockey League. Sixteen teams completed a 72-game season. The Kamloops Blazers won the President's Cup, before going on to win the Memorial Cup. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Tri-City Americans
The Tri-City Americans are a major junior ice hockey team of the Western Hockey League, based in Kennewick, Washington. The team plays its home games at Toyota Center (Kennewick), Toyota Center. Every game is broadcast locally on the Tri-City Americans' flagship radio station KFLD, 870 AM KFLD, and each game can also be heard streaming live aKFLD's UStream Channel as well as occasionally being telecast on Saturday nights on KVEW 42.2. Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (french: Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec; abbreviated ''QMJHL'' in English, ''LHJMQ'' in French) is one of the three major junior ice hockey leagues that constitute the Canadian Hockey League. The league includes teams in the provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. The current president of the QMJHL is Gilles Courteau. The President's Cup is the championship trophy of the league. The QMJHL champion then goes on to compete in the Memorial Cup against the OHL and WHL champions, and the CHL host team. Ontario Hockey League
The Ontario Hockey League (OHL; french: Ligue de hockey de l'Ontario (LHO)) is one of the three major junior ice hockey leagues which constitute the Canadian Hockey League. The league is for players aged 16–19. There are exceptions for overage players of 20 years of age. There are currently 20 teams in the OHL; seventeen in Ontario, two in Michigan, and one in Pennsylvania. Maxim Bets
Maxim Nikolaevich Bets (born January 31, 1974) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player who played three games in the National Hockey League for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Career Bets began his career in Russia with Traktor Chelyabinsk before moving to North America in the junior Western Hockey League where he spent two highly productive seasons with the Spokane Chiefs, scoring 49 goals and 57 assists for 106 points in 1992–93 and 46 goals and 70 assists for 116 points in 1993–94, finishing second for the team between Valeri Bure and Ryan Duthie respectively. Bets was drafted 37th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, but while with the Chiefs, his rights were traded to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for fellow Russian Alexei Kasatonov and played three games for the Mighty Ducks during the 1993–94 NHL season but failed to register a point. Jeff Friesen
Jeffrey Daryl Friesen (born August 5, 1976) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played over 800 games in the National Hockey League, spending roughly half his career with the San Jose Sharks, who drafted him in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. The rest of his career was spent with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, and Calgary Flames. He won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003. Playing career Friesen played his junior years with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL) where he was Rookie of the Year in 1993. He was selected 11th overall in the first round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks. He played 14 season in the NHL as a winger, originally as a left winger but also as a right winger. Ryan Duthie (born September 2, 1974) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey centre who played in North American minor leagues and in Europe. Career Duthie played Junior hockey for Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. He played for the Chiefs for 3 seasons, totaling 270 points in 198 games. During his final season with the Chiefs, Duthie was named to the Western Conference All-Star team. During his time with the Chiefs, Duthie was twice selected in the NHL Entry Draft; first in 1992 by the New York Islanders 105th overall, and again in 1994 by the Calgary Flames 91st overall. Upon being drafted by the Flames, Duthie turned professional and reported to the clubs affiliate team, the Saint John Flames of the AHL. Domenico Pittis (born October 1, 1974) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He is currently an assistant coach with the Calgary Wranglers in the American Hockey League (AHL). Playing career As a youth, Pittis played in the 1988 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Calgary. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (52nd overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. After playing three seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League and three more in the International Hockey League, Pittis appeared in one game in the NHL with the Penguins during the 1996–97 season.
