The 1993 World Snooker Championship (also referred to as the 1993 Embassy World Snooker Championship for the purposes of sponsorship) was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 17 April and 3 May 1993 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. Embassy (cigarette)
Embassy is a Great Britain, British brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Imperial Tobacco. History Embassy was launched in 1914 by W.D. & H.O. Wills and was later relaunched as a coupon brand in 1962. When the Embassy brand was created, as a rebranding of Strand (cigarette), Strand, more effort was put into developing and launching it than any other previous cigarette brand. Embassy Filter was introduced in 1962 and was Britain's top-selling brand from 1964 until 1970, when it was overtaken by John Player & Sons, Player's No. 6. At its peak, it had 24% of the market in 1968. In 2001, Embassy No. 1 had a 3.1% share of the UK licit cigarette market, and an estimated 4.8% share of the illicit market (based on seizures). Alan McManus
Alan McManus (born 21 January 1971) is a Scottish retired professional snooker player and current commentator who works for Eurosport. A mainstay of the world's top sixteen during the 1990s and 2000s, he has won two ranking events, the 1994 Dubai Classic and the 1996 Thailand Open, and competed in the World Championship semi-finals in 1992, 1993 and 2016. He also won the 1994 Masters, ending Stephen Hendry's five-year, 23-match unbeaten streak at the tournament with a 9–8 victory in the final. McManus announced his retirement on 9 April 2021 after losing 6–3 to Bai Langning in the second qualifying round of the 2021 World Snooker Championship. In snooker, a century break (also century, sometimes called a ton) is a of 100 points or more, compiled in one to the table. A century break requires potting at least 25 consecutive balls, and the ability to score centuries is regarded as a mark of the highest skill in snooker. Ronnie O'Sullivan has described a player's first century break as the "ultimate milestone for any snooker player". Shaun Mellish (born 10 January 1970) is an English former professional snooker player. Career Born in 1970, Mellish turned professional in 1991. In his first season, he enjoyed a run to the last 48 at the 1992 World Championship, defeating six opponents including Mike Dunn, Mike Darrington, Marcel Gauvreau, Les Dodd and Tony Chappel before being drawn against New Zealander Dene O'Kane. Karl Payne
Karl Payne is an English former professional snooker player. Career Payne turned professional in 1991. He initially had little success but broke into the top 64 of the world rankings after a good 1995/1996 season, in which he reached the last 32 in two ranking events. Having begun the following season 51st in the world, Payne's form dipped thereafter, and he fell to 77th in 1997. Poor performances over the next two seasons led to Payne slipping to 109th in 1999, and following the conclusion of the 1998/99 season, he lost his professional status at the age of 29. Joe Swail
Joe Swail (born 29 August 1969) is a Northern Irish former professional snooker player from Belfast. He retired in May 2019 after being relegated from the tour. He has reached ten major ranking semi-finals, including the 2000 and 2001 World Championships but only one final. Swail is renowned for playing well at the Crucible Theatre, having reached the last 16 on four further occasions. He is also a former English amateur champion and Northern Ireland amateur runner-up, and has captained Northern Ireland internationally. He was Irish champion in 1992 and 2005. John Giles (born 24 July 1969) is an English former professional snooker player. Career Born in 1969, Giles turned professional in 1992. In his debut season, he won the majority of the matches he played, but due to the vast number of players competing in qualifying for each event, did not progress beyond the last 128 of any of the ranking tournaments for most of that season. Nigel Bond
Nigel Bond (born 15 November 1965) is an English former professional snooker player. Bond competed on the main tour from 1989 to 2022, and was ranked within the world's top 16 players between 1992 and 1999, peaking at 5th for the 1996–97 season. He reached the final of the World Championship in 1995, where he lost 9–18 to Stephen Hendry. He won the 1996 British Open, defeating John Higgins 9–8. Having reached three other ranking tournament finals, Bond won the 2011 Snooker Shoot-Out and, in 2012, defeated Tony Chappel to win the World Seniors Championship. He fell off the tour following his loss to Lukas Kleckers in the first qualifying round for the World Championship in 2022, and subsequently announced his retirement. Mark Bennett (snooker Player)
Mark Bennett (born 23 September 1963) is a Welsh former professional snooker player from Newport. Career Bennett was born on 23 September 1963 in Blackwood, Monmouthshire. After winning the Welsh amateur title in 1985, he turned professional the following year by qualifying through the pro-ticket series. He was ranked in the top 32 for four seasons between 1991 and 1995, reaching a high rank of 24 in 1993. Throughout his thirteen-year professional career he never reached a ranking final, but did reach several tournament quarter-finals and semi-finals. Dave Harold
David Harold (born 9 December 1966) is an English former professional snooker player from Stoke-on-Trent. He was known by the nicknames of "the Hard Man" and "the Stoke Potter" (conflating his home city's pottery industry and his profession of potting snooker balls). He was also the first player on the television circuit to sport a plaster on his chin as a guide for his cue, which is a practice now adopted by Graeme Dott. As an amateur he played as David Harold, but after turning professional in 1991 he was registered as Dave Harold. He won one ranking title, reached two further finals and several semi-finals, and spent four seasons ranked among the top 16. Harold was renowned for both his very strong defensive play and his unusual cue-action, with which he is able to unleash a great deal of power on a shot without using backswing on the cue. Colin Roscoe
Colin Roscoe (born 30 June 1945 in Connah's Quay, Flintshire) is a Welsh former professional snooker player. Career Born in 1945, Roscoe won the Welsh Amateur Championship in 1981 and soon after turned professional. He reached his highest ranking of 39th for the 1984/1985 season, and progressed to the last 32 stage of ten ranking tournaments in the following eight years. Roscoe first made any notable progress at the 1982 International Open, where he beat John Dunning and Doug French but lost 0–5 to Steve Davis in the last 32. Two years later, he reached the last 16 at the 1984 Classic, leading Terry Griffiths 2–0 but losing 2–5. Roscoe's career appeared to be over in the mid-1980s, as he played in few tournaments and did not perform well in any.
