Marathon (sport)
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. Karen MacLeod
Karen Nicolson ( MacLeod; 4 April 1958 – 8 June 2021) was a British long-distance runner. She represented Great Britain running the marathon at the 1996 Summer Olympics and 1993 World Championships in Athletics. She also represented her native Scotland in the 1994 Commonwealth Games marathon. Marathons Karen MacLeod grew up on Skye. After leaving Skye she came late into athletics, at the age of 24 running in the Bath Half Marathon to raise funds for cancer research, from which her father had died. Though within a short time she took part in the world cross-country championships in 1985, 1986 and 1987. In 1987 she won the Scottish National cross-country Championship. MacLeod ran the 10,000m at the 1990 Commonwealth Games finishing 12th in a race won by compatriot Liz McColgan. Marian Rosemarie Sutton (born 7 October 1963) is an English long-distance runner. She won the Chicago Marathon twice and competed for Britain at the 2000 Summer Olympics and several IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. She represented England at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, placing eighth in marathon. Sutton came to prominence as a marathon runner when she finished fifth in the 1995 Chicago Marathon. Then determined to qualify for the 1996 Summer Olympics she with coach Bud Baldaro scheduled training to cope with the heat expected in Atlanta. Maria Rebelo (divorced Rebelo-Lelut; born 29 January 1956 in Ílhavo, Baixo Vouga, Portugal) is a retired female long-distance runner from France. She set her personal best of 2:29:04 hours in the marathon in 1991. Rebelo rose to prominence in the 1986 season by winning the Paris Marathon in the time of 2:32:16. Winner of her first national marathon title in 1990, Maria Rebelo took third at the 1990 European Championships at Split, finishing behind the Portuguese Rosa Mota and the Soviet Valentina Yegorova. Early life and education Kim Jones was born on May 2, 1958, in Sonoma, California. She had a successful high school running career, winning states titles in the 400 meters, 800 meters, and mile.
