103rd United States Congress
The 103rd United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from January 3, 1993, to January 3, 1995, during the final weeks of George H. W. Bush's presidency and the first two years of Bill Clinton's presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Twenty-first Census of the United States in 1990. This is the most recent Congress to have a Democratic senator from Texas, Bob Krueger, who lost election to finish Lloyd Bentsen's term in 1993. Three Democratic senators from the state of Maine, George J. Mitchell, and the state of Tennessee, Jim Sasser and Harlan Mathews, only Sasser lost re-election and the other two retired in 1994, respectively. Vern Ehlers
Vernon James Ehlers (February 6, 1934 – August 15, 2017) was an American physicist and politician who represented Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 until his retirement in 2011. A Republican, he also served eight years in the Michigan Senate and two in the Michigan House of Representatives. Ehlers was the first research physicist to be elected to Congress; he was later joined by Rush Holt, Jr. ( D- NJ) and Bill Foster ( D- IL). The 1984 United States House of Representatives elections was an election for the United States House of Representatives in 1984 which coincided with the 1984 United States presidential election, re-election of President of the United States, President Ronald Reagan in a landslide. This victory also yielded gains for Reagan's United States Republican Party, Republican Party in the House, where they picked up a net of sixteen seats from the United States Democratic Party, Democratic Party. The 1974 United States House of Representatives elections were elections for the United States House of Representatives in 1974 that occurred in the wake of the Watergate scandal, which had forced President Richard Nixon to resign in favor of Gerald Ford. This scandal, along with high inflation, allowed the Democrats to make large gains in the midterm elections, taking 48 seats from the Republicans (an additional seat was gained, for a net gain of 49, when Representative Joe Moakley from Massachusetts switched his party affiliation back to Democrat after winning his 1972 election as an independent), and increasing their majority above the two-thirds mark. Altogether, there were 93 freshmen representatives in the 94th Congress when it convened on January 3, 1975 (76 of them Democrats).
