1993 Omagh District Council Election
Elections to Omagh District Council were held on 19 May 1993 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Omagh District Council
Omagh District Council was a local council in Northern Ireland. It merged with Fermanagh District Council in April 2015 under local government reorganisation to become Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. Its headquarters was in the town of Omagh, which is the traditional county town of Tyrone. The council area was about , making it the second largest local council area in Northern Ireland (by area) with a population of just over 50,000 (25,000 of whom lived in Omagh town). Apart from Omagh the area of the former District Council contains smaller towns including Drumquin, Dromore, Trillick, Fintona, Beragh, Carrickmore and Sixmilecross. The council was established in 1973 and originally had 20 councillors but following a review of local government boundaries in the early 1980s, the number of councillors was increased to 21. Mid Tyrone (District Electoral Area)
Mid Tyrone is one of the seven district electoral areas (DEA) in Fermanagh and Omagh, Northern Ireland. The district elects six members to Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and contains the wards of Beragh, Drumnakilly, Gortin, Owenkillew, Sixmilecross and Termon. Omagh forms part of the West Tyrone constituencies for the West Tyrone (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and West Tyrone (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament. It was created for the 1985 Omagh District Council election, 1985 local elections, replacing Omagh Area B, Omagh Area C and Omagh Area D which had existed since 1973, where it originally contained seven wards (Beragh, Drumnakilly, Gortin, Killyclogher, Owenkillew, Sixmilecross and Termon). Thomas Buchanan (Unionist Politician)
Thomas Buchanan (born 30 July 1963) is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Buchanan has been a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for West Tyrone since 2003. He is also one of the DUP's members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board. He was educated at Langfield Primary School, Castlederg Secondary School, and at Omagh Technical College. In 1993 he was elected to Omagh District Council and became its youngest member and in 2004 was voted Vice Chairman. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2003 being the only member from the DUP for West Tyrone until the 2007 election when he was joined by Allan Bresland who is originally from Donemana and is a member of Strabane District Council. Joe Byrne
Joseph Byrne (21 November 1856 – 28 June 1880) was an Australian bushranger of Irish descent. A friend of Ned Kelly, he was a member of the "Kelly Gang" who were declared outlaws after the murder of three policemen at Stringybark Creek. Despite wearing the improvised body armour for which Ned Kelly and his gang are now famous (and which he is reputed to have designed), Byrne received a fatal gunshot during the gang's final violent confrontation with police at Glenrowan, in June 1880. First years Joe Byrne was born in 1856 in Woolshed, on the Reedy Creek flat 10km NW of Beechworth, Victoria. Paddy McGowan
John Patrick McGowan, known as Paddy McGowan, is a politician in Northern Ireland. McGowan worked in the fire service before joining the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). In 1981, McGowan stood for the SDLP in Omagh District "C", but was not elected. In 1985, he was elected in Mid Tyrone, and in 1989, he moved to represent Omagh Town. Oliver Gibson
Oliver Gibson (born 28 June 1934 in Beragh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, died 27 April 2018 in Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland) was a founding member of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and served as a DUP councillor for West Tyrone. He also served as an MLA for West Tyrone in the first session of the Assembly. Gibson had been a teacher and vice-principal in Omagh High School as well as a Lieutenant in the Ulster Defence Regiment. In December 1974 it was reported that Lieutenant Gibson and a Corporal had been charged with the assault of two men in Omagh causing them actual bodily harm. In October 1983 Gibson announced the creation of a co-operative with a £1 million fund to promote Protestant businesses in the Mid-Tyrone area. A leaflet giving details of the venture stated that shareholder membership "shall be solely Protestant". Omagh
Omagh (; from ga, An Ómaigh , meaning 'the virgin plain') is the county town of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is situated where the rivers River Drumragh, Drumragh and Camowen River, Camowen meet to form the River Strule, Strule. Northern Ireland's capital city Belfast is 68 miles (109.5 km) to the east of Omagh, and Derry is 34 miles (55 km) to the north. Local Government In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). Their functions include planning, waste and recycling services, leisure and community services, building control and local economic and cultural development.
