1993 Equatorial Guinean Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Equatorial Guinea on 21 November 1993. They were the first multi-party elections in the country since the pre-independence elections of 1968. 1968 Spanish Guinean General Election
General elections were held in Spanish Guinea on 22 September 1968 to elect a President and National Assembly that would lead the country when it gained independence as Equatorial Guinea later that year. A second round of the presidential election was held on 29 September. Francisco Macías Nguema of the Popular Idea of Equatorial Guinea led the field in the first round, advancing to a runoff with Prime Minister Bonifacio Ondó Edu. With the endorsement of eliminated candidates Atanasio Ndongo and Edmundo Bossio, Macías Nguema defeated Edu in the runoff. Edu's National Unity Movement of Equatorial Guinea and Ndongo's National Liberation Movement of Equatorial Guinea won ten seats each in the National Assembly, while the Popular Idea won eight. The Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea ( es, Partido Democrático de Guinea Ecuatorial, abbreviated PDGE) is the ruling political party in Equatorial Guinea. It was established by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo on 11 October 1987. Prior to 1991, the PDGE was the sole legal political organization in the country. Still, the PDGE has been the dominant party since its inception, and it typically wins almost all seats in the Parliament. The Chamber of Deputies ( es, Cámara de los Diputados; french: Chambre des députés; pt, Câmara dos Deputados) is the lower house of the Parliament of Equatorial Guinea. Although vested with considerable powers under the country's constitution, the Chamber has been dominated by the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea since its establishment, and there is virtually no opposition to executive decisions. Indeed, there have never been more than eight opposition legislators in the body. Prior to 2013, the Chamber was a unicameral legislature and was named the Chamber of People's Representatives ( es, Cámara de los Representantes del Pueblo).
