1992 World Snooker Championship
The 1992 World Snooker Championship (also referred to as the 1992 Embassy World Snooker Championship for the purposes of sponsorship) was a professional Snooker world rankings, ranking snooker tournament that took place between 18 April and 4 May 1992 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. John Parrott was the defending champion but he lost 12–13 to Alan McManus in the quarter-finals and fell to the Crucible curse, becoming another champion unable to defend his first world title. Stephen Hendry was the eventual winner, after defeating Jimmy White 18–14 in the final. At one point White led by 14–8, but Hendry then won 10 successive frames to secure his second World Championship title. The tournament was sponsored by cigarette manufacturer Embassy (cigarette), Embassy. Embassy is a Great Britain, British brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Imperial Tobacco. History Embassy was launched in 1914 by W.D. & H.O. Wills and was later relaunched as a coupon brand in 1962. When the Embassy brand was created, as a rebranding of Strand (cigarette), Strand, more effort was put into developing and launching it than any other previous cigarette brand. Embassy Filter was introduced in 1962 and was Britain's top-selling brand from 1964 until 1970, when it was overtaken by John Player & Sons, Player's No. 6. At its peak, it had 24% of the market in 1968. In 2001, Embassy No. 1 had a 3.1% share of the UK licit cigarette market, and an estimated 4.8% share of the illicit market (based on seizures). 1983 World Snooker Championship
The 1983 World Snooker Championship (also known as the 1983 Embassy World Snooker Championship for the purposes of sponsorship) was a professional snooker tournament that took place between 16 April and 2 May 1983 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. This was the third and final world ranking event of the 1982–83 snooker season following the 1982 Professional Players Tournament. Sixteen seeded players qualified directly for the event, with an additional sixteen players progressing through a two-round qualification round held at the Romiley Forum in Stockport, and Redwood Lodge in Bristol. The winner of the event received £30,000, and the tournament was sponsored by cigarette company Embassy. Alex Higgins was the defending champion, having won the 1982 championship, but he lost 5–16 to Steve Davis in the semi-finals.
