1992 Vermont Gubernatorial Election
The 1992 Vermont gubernatorial election took place on November 3, 1992. After Republican Governor Richard Snelling died in office on August 13, 1991, Lieutenant Governor Howard Dean, a Democrat, took over for the remainder of his term. Incumbent Democrat Howard Dean ran successfully for election to a full term as Governor of Vermont, defeating Republican candidate John McClaughry. Howard Dean
Howard Brush Dean III (born November 17, 1948) is an American physician, author, lobbyist, and retired politician who served as the 79th governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003 and chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 2005 to 2009. Dean was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2004 presidential election. Later, his implementation of the fifty-state strategy as head of the DNC is credited with the Democratic victories in the 2006 and 2008 elections. Afterward, he became a political commentator and consultant to McKenna Long & Aldridge, a law and lobbying firm. Before entering politics, Dean earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1978. Dean served as a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1983 to 1986 and as Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1987 to 1991. John McClaughry
John McClaughry is an American author and politician. He served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1969 to 1972 and the Vermont State Senate from 1989 to 1992. Early life and education McClaughry grew up in Paris, Illinois. In 1958, he earned an AB in physics and mathematics from Miami University. In 1960, he earned an MS in nuclear engineering from Columbia University. In 1963, he earned a MA in political science from University of California, Berkeley. From 1962 to 1965, McClaughry spent time living as a hobo and hopped trains, traveling in boxcars about 5,000 miles across 19 states. Career McClaughry moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked at the moderate Republican magazine ''Advance''. In 1968, John F. Osborne in '' The New Republic'' called McClaughry "a remarkable white Republican activist" who was working "to promote black opportunity and black control of black communities." Richard Snelling
Richard Arkwright Snelling (February 18, 1927August 13, 1991) was an American businessman and politician. He was most notable for his service as the 76th and 78th governor of Vermont from 1977 to 1985 and from January 10, 1991, until his death. A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Snelling was educated in Allentown and served in the United States Army at the end of World War II and during the post-war occupation of Germany. He graduated from Harvard University in 1948 and embarked on a business career, working for companies in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. After settling in Vermont, he founded Shelburne Industries, a maker of ski racks and other ski equipment. United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 3, 1992, in 12 states and two territories. Going into the elections, six of the seats were held by Democrats and six by Republicans. After the elections, eight seats were held by Democrats and four by Republicans. The elections coincided with the presidential election. This was the last year in which Rhode Island held a gubernatorial election in the same year as the presidential election.
